hello cees. is the weather bad there? I hope to visit netherlands in the next few years. the weather is bad in usa--snowing, rain, etc.

don't understand your comment "free" ("colorado free bikes?"). I read the linked article. what is free?

cees have you ever done any civil work, wrt to transit? cycling is not very popular in the u.s. nederlands and japan have a very good cycling infrastructure--or so I've heard. hope to travel soon. please let us know about things of interest in holland.

maybe the bikes seemed free to the guys who sold them on ebay.

glad they got caught. Does anyone think they should have had a stiffer sentence?

cees, are you talking about some sort of skate surfing?

the wind out there on the zuiderzee is incredible. I could not believe the windsurfers out there. They hardly ever even touched the water.

if you got going on skates, you'd be going freeway speed! is that what you're talking about??

Babelfish translation:

'Depending on of the circumstances can be obtained with these ijszeilers speeds of wide 100 km per hour."

that's freeway speed, all right.

Thanks Cees, that's beautiful!

This case had a special meaning to me as I was scheduled to be one of about 20 witnesses in the trial. I had a few brief discussions with the DA's office and essentially, the problem for them was the expense of the trial. Paying for the travel and lodging expenses of the witnesses was going to cost a bundle. The case actually went to a mediator and was settled that way. The concept of using a mediator in a criminal procedure was new to me, but then I'm no lawyer. I was told that they (the DA's office) felt they had an ironclad case, but still it's easier and cheaper to "bargain". The mediation has been going on for some time I believe (since around October), and the stumbling block was that the perp didn't want to plead guilty. Ultimately, he copped a decent deal IMO. Was justice served? You'd have to ask the victims I guess. He will be making restitution, and that's probably better than jail time to the people who lost the $$$.

When I first read of this case a couple years ago it aroused my interest and I checked my E-files on bicycle transactions because I knew that I had bought some stuff from a guy in the Springs. My search didn't register with the name in the press. About a year later I got a letter from the PD indicating that I had made a purchase from this guy and they gave me the E-Bay handle of the seller. BINGO!!! I had saved all my correspondence about the deal including my questions to the seller. The Detective was most appreciative.

If you see them out on the ice...wow...they fly. (here's a more current article)
