For too many yrs. the only pants I wore were Levi 501 "Rigids". These are the orig. Levis and are shrink to fit button fly. Order the 2 inches wide and 4 inches long....they lose money on me ;)

Levi straight leg with a zipper. I was in two bad cycle accidents (1st -broken clavicle, 2nd-broken/dislocated shoulder) and my levi's never got a scuff mark from the pavement. 'Nuff said!

My first jeans (in the 60s) was a pair of Levi's 505s; zipper instead of button fly. Been in that style since. Still have a pair that was made in the U.S. (from about 10 years ago).

I did like the commercial with the Chardon girl, though.

Too bad Levi has moved production to Turkey, S. America and elsewhere. Unlike some of those very fine welded and very cheep bikes coming out of (say) Taiwan, the current Levis are AWFUL. The quality of coton used, the dye, the looms, etc. SUCK. The only way to get the good type of Levis is to either buy them used (and sometimes "vintage" -- have you taken a look at how much a nice pair of old school 501s from the 50s/60s go for on ebay?) or buy the boutique Levis Vintage line, which recreates worn jeans from their vault. These are made on the old looms, their quality is terrific and -- oh, look like they were found in a mine (which some of the originals were). They cost around 250 - 700 USD. When they first hit the market, I got a pair that were'nt pre-"worn" -- they cost me 175 USD and I've pretty much worn them everyday for about 4 years. I think back the they day, this quality of denim could be had for something like 5 bucks at the local Walgreen.

The local trend in "designer jeans" has really killed Levi's. Did you see the article in the times a couple of weeks ago? It turns out Levi's is the 5th most litigious company in the States. They spend millions of dollars to go after trademark infringments -- like arched sticking on the back pockets. I think they actually won a case, and some guy making Jeans in So Cal wrote them a 5000 dollar check.

Sorry for the rant, but the current state of denim bums me out. I'm in love with that fabric and what it does when it meets the body and stays there for years.

My boss's wife worked for Levi's for almost 25 years. She could tell you some
stories! The simplest way to summarize Levis' problem is their image. In a
world of selling youth and cool through fashion, Levi's lost all credibility as
a brand when they they became known as the "my Dad wears Levi's" brand.
(and that's not a compliment!)
As painful as it is, the youth market holds the key to what's 'cool'.
Levis lost that market, and everything else soon followed.

This has been a major issue w/ Andrew, my 16 year old son. He's tall (5'8"-5'9") and as thin as a rail. Not skinny, thin. He doesn't like baggy clothes at all; period. Now try finding jeans that aren't baggy and wide to start with. We occasionally have found 29/30 or 31, but the 29's are still too big in the waist. I got him a pair of the Levi's, which still would need altered, but when he got to the button fly, it was a total "I don't think so." Back to the store. Got another pair of Levi's and then it was off to alterations. I paid for the jeans ($30) and then another $18 to get them altered enough to fit him! Good thing, he'll wear them until they're falling off of him.

True story. Two days ago we shopped for jeans at the "Jean Bar". It is run by a former top chef and they "consult" on premises to ensure your "best jeans experience". They also have a liquor license...no 'chit. $150 was pretty much where it begain :rolleyes: I esp. appreciated the heavily medicated husband reading Esquire while mom and daughter glamorized and accessorized. True life is hard to deny. But it's harmless.

So, at the end of da day Ken you hit the mark as usual.

Levis 559 jeans.

The original 501's are for skinny legs, if you have quads, hams and glutes you won't be slipping on 501's. Maybe 501's for the climber but for the rouleur or TT guy he's going need some more room in the legs.

Years ago when I worked in a Big and Tall clothing store we had a young man who would shop there. 15-16 years old and he wore a 29x38 jeans and by the time he graduated was in a 30-40. Oh yeah he later played in the NBA for a while. Last time I ran into him he was still very tall but a very long way from a 30" waist :p .

501s are terrible- you can totally see the hitter box in your pocket and you just dont look cool with you hand stuck in your pocket like a racoon-

Carharts rock and when you don't need the extra weight/durability, the Lee Dungarees rock. Plus, you can buy the Lee's at Kohls for like $15 a pair.

If you like vintage and quality workmanship check out japanese brands such as sugarcanes. They are like a sachs, vanilla, kirk, because they are shrink to fit and include details you can't see, but appreciate(hidden rivets, selvedge denim)

7 for all mankind are the cervelo of jeans. Everyone knows them, most people would'nt mind a pair, if they cost less.

Earnest Sewn seem like a peg. They are well made, definitely different and use interesting finishes. If you are skinny they are a great choice as they make smaller sizes and slim cuts.

Levis Vintage Collection, are kind of like a specialized 25th annivesary stumpjumper.
