KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- A Nepalese Sherpa has broken the record for the fastest ascent of Mt. Everest, scaling the world's highest mountain in 8 hours and 10 minutes (http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/05/21/everest.record/index.html). :p

I wonder what the VO2 max of those Sherapas are (is?)? Those guys do so many trips up and back down, with so much weight. Truely amazing. Very amazing place and people.

A good friend of mine is on Everest now and hoping to summit on the 23rd-24th. They are doing daily reports so we can follow along. Check out the telecast at: http://www.alpineascents.com/cybercasts.asp if interested.

Any mention of the starting altitude (base camp one I think is @ 17K)? Also, the distance covered? 8 hours and 10 minutes. I wonder if he was carrying anything like O2, water, etc. My gym has this new torture device made by Nordic track. It is a treadmill that allows a 50% setting. 30% @2.5 mph really had my heart a-pumpin and my achilles a-strainin. In 25 minutes, I "climbed" 1.3 miles and 1299' for an average grade of 18.9%. At that pace, I could make the climb in a little over 4.5 hours from base camp 1. "Honey, I'm going to Nepal..."
