I'm heading to NY next month from far,far away and would like a little help.
Can anyone recommend a good hotel. Modern, clean, good location and well priced.
What are the better websites to book online?
I will also visit RA Cycles in Brooklyn. Are there any good Manhattan bike shops worth checking out.
Thanking you all

manhattan is a series of neighborhoods. each pretty different. each with its own flavor. with subways and cabs you can get around manhattan quite easily and sample all the flavors/neighborhoods. that said, where your hotel is tilts your visit/experience in one direction or another. midtown is very different from the village/soho, for instance. there are more hotels in midtown but personally, i'd suggestion being farther downtown. one good, reasonably priced (for manhattan anyway) hotel is the W union square. farther downtown, but pricier, is 60 thompson and the soho grand. walking around downtown manhattan (village, east village, alphabet city, soho, chelsea, photo district) is a great experience, with great shops, places to eat, and street life. my .02 would be to look for a hotel south of 34th street for sure, and south of union square/14th street if possible. nyc hotel prices are the highest in america. they hurt. but new york is, well, new york. nothing like it, for better or worse. have fun, and thanks fastfreddie for your PM on the other subject.

My wife just used Hotwire to get an excellent deal on a midtown hotel. Nothing fancy, but clean and cheap. But she's not much on bikeshops...
p.s. Someone posted a link to Conrad's a while back - That looks like my kind of bike shop!

Leslie and I have stayed a couple of times at The Beacon Hotel at 75th and Broadway. Short walk to 72nd St subway station. Better than decent coffee shop/restaurant. 74th and Broadway has Beacon liquors: excellent selection of wine. The California stuff was cheaper than regular prices here. Across the street is a large Fairway Market with a pizza joint above. Next door to that is a fine Italian deli/food market. Two nights I had a grand time buying good stuf from these shops and eating in our suite at the Beacon.
It's an old hotel but the rooms were fine and the prices were low for NYC. and we liked the neighborhood. We did not have a car but there was a garage nearby. I t probably costs more than our room  .

check out nyc velo. lower east side. the owner is a really nice guy. it is right around the corner from trackstar, a must see for the fixed gear enthusiast. a boutique/functional shop for messenger/scenesters and track/fixed bikes. i dig it, though.

as ken points out, the upper west side is cool neighborhood too. it has central park, zabars, barney greengrass, museum of natural history, lincoln center and just across the park on the near eastside are museums galore. i don't know if toga (a bike shop on the far westside) is still around. if so, it was cool back in the day.

I loved a stay at The Benjamin/ (http://www.thebenjamin.com/) 52nd and Lexington, midtown.
Nicer and larger rooms than the Ritz Carlton Central Park, for about 1/3 the price.
SoHo Grand is very nice. I found The W to be interesting but expensive for the experience.

I've stayed across the street at the metropolitan (http://www.doubletree.com/en/dt/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=NYCDTDT)
It's right near the subway station.
There are a million great places in NYC. I love the place. Everytime I visit,
we try to stay in a different area, just to keep from repeating things. Next
visit it will either be the upper west side, or the village. or maybe jersey city!

Thank you.... Thank you ..........Thank you!
I think the anticipation is often the best part of the trip.
With regards to Hotwire, are the hotels they deal with reputable.
I'm going to be in NY for 2 weeks and whilst I like the attraction of the prices they offer, I don't want to make a mistake picking the wrong hotel.
Thanks again to all

Yes. I stayed at a Hilton (not in NYC) a few weeks back for about half the going rate by booking through Hotwire. The only trouble is, you won't know the name of the hotel you've chosen until you commit to purchase. You have to make your choice based on Hotwire's ratings of the properties.
It's worked pretty well for me and I've saved some cash.

if you're going to be in nyc for two weeks, a hotel you don't love/like could ruin your trip. i'd only book through a site that tells you the name of the hotel upfront. i stayed in nyc a month or two ago on biz at the roger williams. nice enough but my room was tiny with no windows. i was there just one night but even that was almost too long! for two weeks, i'd balance savings and experience. i've had good luck with orbitz.
