hmm teaser indeed, the link to the groupsets sends you to a generic page where ekar isn't shown, oh well..

Looks like it’s got a clutch and a standard rear derailleur mount.

It also appears to use a chorus crankset with a different ring and logo.

It will probably be a long while till I go 1x again since I am not a big fan but I think that looks great

Looks more like a midrange group, derailleur cage looks like stamped aluminum (centaur/Potenza) as opposed to forged alu or carbon. If this lands in the chorus price range, it’s definitely an appealing group to me.

Someone on WW is claiming that it’s priced lower than chorus 12. I am a bit skeptical at lower, but in line with chorus makes sense.

I'm taking the under on a 30% chance that I'll be able to get that 13 speed ekar rear derailleur to play nice with my 11 speed Campy shifters.

Which, for me, would be a bummer.

That’s a mighty small front ring... which makes me think we’re looking a sub-11 cog in the back and a new free hub standard :(

Already announced with the Shamal DB's back in July.

Yes, new freehub, but full backwards compatibility:

The new freehub "standard" is already confirmed. And actually kind of neat and backwards compatible:
https://www.campagnolo.com/US/en/next_3_ways

Very excited for Ekar. The intrinsic feel of Campy is second to none, and for rougher conditions mechanical shifting is still king.

I wonder what the RD, shifters and cassette will cost.

We already discussed this on another thread (https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=254685&highlight=campagnolo+ekar&page=17) - small cogs are 10 and 9t. The new FH body is both new and not new - it will be backwards compatible (https://cyclingtips.com/2020/07/campagnolo-debuts-shamal-db-wheelset-with-a-freehub-full-of-13-speed-secrets/) with 11-12s cassettes!

I don't like new FH body standards either, but if they wanted 10t small cogs, then they physically needed a new standard. Why not make it 11t small cogs? I asked that before, and I think Mark McM pointed out that if you do this, then the chainring has to be bigger, and the biggest cog has to be quite big indeed.

I notice that the chain says C12 on it. No surprise there.

Are you sure? A few of them looked like 12s to me but most appear to be a 13.

I hope those Ekar branded crank protectors fit my chorus crankset.

Why no apocalyptic rear derailleur cage pulley wheels? Seems the norm these days. Chain links read "C13".

yall saying it looks cheapers cuz no carbon but to me that is by far better looking than any of the campy 12 speed road rear derailleurs. I actually think it looks good and makes sense with gravel=more alum/less carbon.

I agree, by the look of things, those materials and build suit the application. Campagnolo thinks this stuff out pretty well. I’m really excited about the reveal as I’ll likely buy one of these groups.

Any idea on lead time?

If those crank arm protectors fit chorus, I may need to make another order.

The chain does say C13. I may buy one, just to measure it. Pinkjersey.com offers pre-orders.

Actually... yes, that's largely right. Still, the etched 'hieroglyphics' on the crank, and perhaps the smaller dimensions, give it a better overall aesthetic.

The Chorus cranks look too Shimano-esque right now. I'd prefer a retro-modern look.

I’m telling you, outside of the decals, they look identical. I am guessing they come out of the exact same mold. You can even see the chainring has built-in offset to center it. If it was a dedicated crank, they could have made the chainline correct without the more expensive ring.

Ekar cranks might look identical to Chorus cranks from this angle, but I'd be willing to bet that as a 1x crank, they removed the threaded inserts for the inner chainring (which would be cost cutting step).

Yes, I agree. Similar to alloy arms that are not drilled for a triple but have the bosses. Saving the tooling cost is key.

Edit:
That does assume there is an insert. It looks like the small ring may actually mount to the large ring in chorus. I did not pull a bolt to verify, but I’m not convinced it goes through the ring and into the crank. It sorta looks like a “tripilizer” in double form.

Ok, so I looked again with my flashlight. I see finished carbon fiber through the hole on chorus small chainring bolts. I am nearly certain Ekar and Chorus use the same crankset but when you buy chorus, you get a double setup where the small ring bolts directly to the large ring. This design not only allows for a single and double to share crank arms, but it also lets you change the BCD of the small ring.

Looks like a pretty cool groupset but I think they could have done a better job on the crankset. Even if it is a different crank than Chorus, it still looks like they slapped a 1x chainring on a crank meant for a double.

Curious to read about the details, though.
