Campy QuickShift workaround...

I recently diagnosed a defective Campy Record front derailleur clamp. So rather than simply replacing the front derailler (which is my first option especially since it may still be under warrantee), the thought occurred to me... perhaps I should upgrade to the new Record QS front derailleur. Now I realize I need to upgrade the ergo shifters which I'm told can be easily be rebuilt by a LBS specialist who knows how to upgrade the appropriate QS shifter gear. Doing a simple rebuild avoids having to purchase new Campy shifters (this rebuildable feature is one of the reason I chose Campy over DA). What do you guys think? Have you ever known anyone to rebuild the shifters? For those of you who know the difference between pre and post 07 shifters, is this a significant improvement in shifting?

I know that my mechanic rebuilds the shifters, but I am not sure if he can rebuild a pre-2007 shifter with the same mechanisms and make it a QS shifter.

There is a difference in the shifting. The QuickShift lives up to its name: very little time between shifting on the lever and the shifting of the gear. Almost feels instantaneous.

Petitt, I had this conversation with one of the higher end shops (Richmond VA) a few months back and this person indicated is was a relatively simple procedure that involved replacing a gear. I believe he had said a 15-20 minute rebuild job. The assumption, of course, is that you need to replace the front derailleur in order to complete the transformation.

I guess it could be done, but we at our shop have not had this request, nor the thought of doing this. I figure that you could check the schematics and find the difference and then just change it. Thanks terrytnt!

Same here. I'd bet it can be done, but getting the '07 QS ratchet piece
might not be instock yet, that could be the only delay.

I just replaced the 2006 10 shifters with 2007 QS (on new bike). A big difference in speed and feel. You might write in to the CampyOnly tech to see if there is a shifter upgrade possible, not every change is compatable. But he would know.

Meanwhile...ride the fixie :-)

Jon, I may be in the same situation. Have a 2006 Record group and have been told I can upgrade to 07 QS simply by rebuilding the shifter (and of course changing out the front derailleur). So..... appears you've done it and the mechanic from Richmond is correct. He convinced me a month or two ago that he's already accomplished several upgrades.

Must call him back and check this out...

Here is the 07 ergo record QS sheet and the 06 non QS version.

The QS ratchet is RE-234 the 06 one is RE-134

Quick question... since I need the front derailleur 'ASAP', is there a problem with upgrading the QS front derailleur BEFORE adding the new gear in the Ergo shift mechanism? In other words, must both changes occur simaltaneously?

I haven't actually tried that yet, but it should work at least ok.
The cable pull ratio won't be the same, but the shifter should
be able to pull enough cable to get the derailleur over to the
big ring.

I have download these exploded views of Campagnolo parts from the website in the past. They are quite helpful.

I really doubt that any such images of Shimano parts exist for public viewing, although I could be wrong.
