Any artists out there that paint during your rides, or paint from a photo of a ride?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200910/ac65432d2cf973986c46e91c611f794e.jpg

I haven’t painted, but did some pen and ink sketching of pueblos on a bike tour across Spain last year. It was a nice way to pass the afternoon if we checked into a hotel early. I have no training (as my sketch will make clear) but it was fun to draw these. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200910/32310b79516d8ddfa866d91c8e4f324e.jpg

Thanks! Some say Albarracin is the most beautiful small town in Spain. The whole place is built on a steep mountain sides with a river winding below. You could fill a notebook with sketches easily--wonderful architecture every direction you turn. It's a great place to ride a bike too--all of Aragon has relatively empty roads. That's fantastic!

Not a "painting" from my own ride (and not my typical art style), but occasionally I'll do digital watercolor/ink renditions of photos on IG that speak to me.

I've always been a fan of the IG feeds from the guys running Rodeo Labs, and the digital illustration below (Procreate app, iPad) was from a photo of theirs that really struck a chord with me. I grew up in Utah and spent summers down in the red rocks -- of course back then it never would have even crossed my mind the thought of riding drop bars on this type of terrain.

People that have talent in the art of painting see things differently than I do. Then have the ability to project that view to others with whatever media they are using. The process is something I cannot do, and it amazes me.

My cousin is a pretty accomplished painter ( for still being alive and young)

He has done live paintings of the finish during the pro races, charity type events. I can't find a photo of one without digging mega deep in insta land. @adam_oday if your curious

hes got a really great aesthetic, along with all the painters via previous posts.

love this concept

Does OT mean off-topic? Maybe I have it confused, but I don’t think this thread is OT at all. I think illustrating the simple and often extraordinary experience of riding a bike is nothing short of profound, and boldly on topic. That is all.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. Some could easily be considered on-topic.
ie: this first work pictured I did from a bike tour in Europe, in Haarlem NL. It actually features my ride. The second one is from a mountain bike ride on the W slope of the Tetons. But it's not necessarily about the ride, rather more about the effects of climate change, humans' effect on the natural ecosystems, and my interaction with that. It just so happens that this is the kind of stuff I think about when I'm riding uphill. So the second one is more shameless promotion, which I'm not necessarily against, but wouldn't want to act like it's all about the ride. If interested, you can read the contrasting stories about each work on my website. First one is here: https://www.kristendunkelbergerfineart.com/workszoom/3670890/niewe-gracht-haarlem-nl#/. Second is here: https://www.kristendunkelbergerfineart.com/workszoom/3915567/smoke-veiled-tetons#/

Shameless promotion, definitely off-topic! :)

Anyone out there still hoping for a big breakthrough, maybe you should try drinking a fifth of whisky a day...

ART SCHOOL, AT least as it exists in the U.S., is a relatively new invention. The availability of a degree in fine arts, and the expectation that an artist earn one, became typical around the end of World War II, when the G.I. Bill afforded veterans the ability to attend colleges and universities. Before then, aspirants to the art world largely figured out the mechanics themselves, through apprenticeships, maybe, or informal classes at independent schools like the Art Students League of New York, where working artists like the painter Thomas Hart Benton instructed Jackson Pollock, even if the instruction shaded toward the antagonistic (Benton despised abstraction; Pollock said the only thing that he learned from the older artist was how to drink a fifth of whiskey a day).

Since we're talking art, there's an interesting story on the NYT web site about self-taught artists that's somewhat relevant to this thread:.

That’s a decent article, but what I would expect for the coverage of a varied subculture the author has learned a bit about. I have a BFA, which I got because I wanted to learn about art. I never thought I would have a ‘career’ in the traditional sense - you know, it pays your bills and you can take a vacation sometimes. But I know people who are artists and approached it from many directions, and about 2% make a living from their art work. They teach art, business skills, writing, community building. The self promotion, IMO, is the link in the chain of being an artist. To complete the work, someone has to see it. No one will show it for you. OK, maybe your parents, if they’re cool. (Mine aren’t, never were). But the real bottom line is that to be an artist is to set off on a lifetime of learning and self exploration. Doesn’t matter if you never go to ‘school’ or have a phd. And Pollock was an angry individual. He could have learned to drink whiskey from his mentor in an accounting department! I find the reference to his alcoholism in the article yet another dangerous falsehood in the portrayal of creatives. Discuss. :) PS. I’m a big fan of Jammie Holmes’ work! And he works his butt off!

I don't paint worth a ..... but I bring a sketch book on trips and try to capture things as ink sketches. I find that the act of trying to do this helps me remember a scene better, and helps see more detail I overlook in a quick scan of a spot, no matter how beautiful it might be in that mode. I try to do a drawing in a half hour or so..

There is a lovely village in the Var region of France called Tourtour. This is the mairie. It is a fine riding destination if you are in the area, and indeed, we saw a lot of cyclists there, catching a cafe or a snack on their way through.
