Ok, this isn't for me, it's for one of my long time customers. He's really looking for a basic bike computer with altimeter or GPS. He really doesn't want a Garmin or anything big and expensive. It's mainly for racing so he can figure some things like elevation changes and whatnot for courses. An old Avocet 50 would've been perfect but of course they aren't made anymore.

Any ideas?

The Lezyne Mini GPS ($100) seems to fit the bill. The cheaper Macro Easy GPS ($80) works too.

I have been using a Bryton Rider 410 for over a year now & love it.
I paid $89 on Ebay new thru Taiwan seller. (bought from USA)

These are nice because they use the usual battery that gets replaced once in awhile, as opposed to the GPS types that need to be recharged regularly. I have an old Mavic Wintech Alti and a newer Cat Eye Adventure with barometric altimeters. They are fine for someone who wants to know the altitude gain on a ride but doesn't care to download data. The buttons on the Cat Eye are a bit fussy, but that is a small thing. It looks like Sigma and VDO still make models with altimeters, although I don't know if they have distribution in the US.

Sigma bc 14.16 has an altimeter, small and cheap.
Sigma bc 23.16 is a bit bigger, also has heart rate and cadence
