I'm totally ignorant when it comes to headset sizes/variations. Colnago C40 with 1 inch Colnago carbon fork; what dimensions are important for specifying a replacement? Any Colnago specific quirks to take into consideration? Any manufacturer harder to install than others? Bottom race installed on the fork easy to remove or is it a LBS job only?

Thanks,

There is nothing specific or special about a Colnago C40 head tube. It's just a 1" head tube and accepts external cup headsets.

Assuming you have a threadless setup i.e. the stem clamps to the steerer tube and not a quill stem, this would work:

as would this:

Crown races are best removed at the bike shop, unless you think you'll do it often, then invest in one of these:

Or do it the ghetto way with a screwdriver:

If you're having a bike shop install the new headset, I'm sure they'll be happy to remove the old crown race for you at the same time.

Thanks,

1) any 1 inch threaded headset with a fork crown race of 26.4mm, like a Campagnolo Record one..a Colnago needs this
2) No
3)..not really, need proper tools to remove old one and press in new one
4) Best to let LBS remove and replace..

The only issue with a Colnago carbon fork is that you need to use the Colnago expander plug. You can't use a star nut and you will not be able to find a third party expander plug that fits into the slightly overbuilt steerer tube.

They are difficult to find, and NLA from Colnago...
