Serotta pals, I have a friend who is starting out riding with the intentions of doing some sprint triathlons. I wanted to see if anyone had input on makes and models that you would recommend for him. He wants to stay under a $1K and I want to help him with the purchase. He isn't opposed to getting something used, but I wonder if this is best choice for him since he isn't sure about fit and it would be nice for him to start a relationship with a LBS. I can certainly help with fit and maintenance, but he isn't just around the corner from where I live.

I look forward to your input.

I started out on a Spesh Allez Sport that served me well until I cracked the headtube in a typical crit crash.

1K will get you Surly Crosscheck and a set of slicks. Bianchi Eros on the closeout from 2006 would be good too; you can get the last year of Celest.

"you can get the last year of Celest"
This is a sad milestone. After 50-60 years of this trademark color, why drop it.

Bicycling magazine rated the Trek 1000 as the best for it's price, right around $700.00, the 1500 is only $1,149.00 on the website with 105 group.
