We seem to have more and more mountain bikes in the bike gallery. Presumably these are getting ridden so lets see them out in their natural habitat. Plus this is just another area for Houston to show his amazing pictures.

I'll start.

Can't put any photos on this thread, because apparently I've used them sometime in the past and using them again is frowned upon in this establishment? Lol.

7th picture down in the OP, I thought I was looking at a picture of Alejandro Valverde on a dirt bike!

Andy, you have us all beat. For me, having a summer with no MTB as I wait for an Ibis to eventually get here, this is especially painful to see ;)

New fork - 130mm 34 Factory with the amazing new GRIP2 damper - and new seatpost - 175mm Fox Transfer - for the Evil. I don't have any "natural environment" photos right now because I'm having too much fun riding it to be bothered with landscape photography while aboard, so this will have to suffice. Custom painted 34 SC will be off to its new home in Australia soon. Better photos... at some point soon. :)

I did the Fast Fitty gravel road race in Charlotte two weeks ago.
Going to Munising for the Mountain Goat Mash Sept. 12th.

Been enjoying a hardtail over the last year. After having a blast on a recent trip to Maine, I decided to make the move to FS:

Checked out the USM Gorham trails, Gould Academy XC trails, Mt. Abram's new lift service, but Blackstrap Mountain Preserve (pictured) was the highlight. It's the New England-iest. There's even a great flow trail there too.

Pic from circa 2003 in San Diego - iirc it was an ebay grab that had me reliving my high-school dreambike fun from 1997 when I was working at a pre-Trek Klein dealer in SW WA.. My '97 version was built a lot better though: SpeedSprings, Paul's Love Levers, XTR, and Control Tech brakes.

Took some glam shots of my Stumpjumper ST while messing about in the NW corner of CT. Also just put on some new Hope/ WTB wheels and upgraded it to 12 speed XT. Now just have to put on a 32 tooth up front so that it stops rubbing against the frame protection in the 10. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200929/8a8f37c5602841586cf102a9baaac107.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200929/8e0e66a1a00e5e7eb88648a23bb69478.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200929/e2e1cc769d14f1e8671bc953da489f1d.jpg

I drove from SoCal to MD. Some pics I took on Comanche trail, Palo Dura Canyon, TX, then Slaughterhouse Trails in Bentonville, AR (only took one pic, was having too much fun just going along. Next was Glade Runner at St James MO, super fun flowing trail through the woods with some more techy rocky side routes near the creek/river area. Finally Scales Lake in Boonville IN--just a pure fun roller coaster through the woods, lots of little down/ups and tight turns. I also rode at Morgantown WV, but took no pics.

edit: all pics loaded at 90 degrees, no idea why, they show upright on my laptop?

jimcav
10-02-2020, 09:25 PM
stopped at Capitol View State Park in Frankfort KY--great fun; well kept trail network near the river.
Then back to Scales Lake
Then Creve Coeur Park just west of St Louis--nice flowing trail through the woods. LARGE aerial course there too
ailed to ride in DeSoto KS due to a huge cross country meet, so on to Lake Wilson where I just had time before sunset to do the Marina Loop--very fun, I did it reverse of mtbproject so had some tough step-ups but it was very manageable. DEfinitely worth the stop if you are on I-70
From there I did a big drive to Western CO, so I could knock out 2 epic rides my last day: AM ride at Fruita 18 road area--such great trails. I had so much fun I didn't stop much for pics--only one was my least favorite--zippity do dah. A one-note type of trail up and down the ridge line, which for me just tested my guts/confidence for screaming VERY fast almost straight down a line into wash-board-rattling brutality and then up again. All the other trails were so much more fun--I had one section of the frontside trail after western zippity trail that I'd not clear on my best day, and had to hike a bike that section. From Fruita I drove to LaVerkin UT for afternoon ride on JEM, Goosebumps, Cryptobiotic, back up cryptobiotic to JEM, and back around to the truck. Most fun for me was Fruita and JEM area trails--nothing like 2-3 mile swooping, curving, dropping, rolling awesomeness
Most smiles with no pucker factor at all for me was St James MO and Scales Lake, IN, but I do love winding through forests--both offer about 7 mile loops with some additional options, and the main risk is just going too fast for some of the unexpected corners. Bentonville was great too, but I'd need more time there to get familiar with routes and best directions to link things--it also goes in and out of a pretty popular park and residential area, and I prefer the more wilderness feel. But the trails are well maintained and very fun.

This is me about 3/4 the way down Horsethief Bench in Fruita, CO a year or so ago. I chickened out after this attempt. Too scared to make the final plunge. I'd already stabbed my groin with the bars on the 2nd try. Once my broken leg is healed, I hope to head back with my new Knolly Warden and tackle the rest!

There's a sharp left after that drop you see me on in the photo. You either have to go through a channel on the right and risk clipping a pedal, or hit the nose of the slab in the foreground dead-on and roll away. And if you want to do it without dabbing, you almost have to do some sort of trials hops to get aligned with your line. I just didn't have the confidence or skills, even after putting a foot down. Skeered!

I was slightly underbiked here riding a Pony Rustler converted to 29x2.4 with 120 rear and 140 front. And I was continuously scrubbing my butt on the tire after every drop which is always unnerving. Apart from my BMC Fourstroke, I've gone exclusively 27.5 to avoid "tossing my salad".

I stop there a few times per year on my way to Utah, and for the life of me, I don't see any lines down (or up) Horsethief. I have an over-active fear of death, I suppose. Good on you for 3/4.

I've seen that! Crazy. I'll have to summon my inner Ali Clarkson or Danny Macaskill.

There's no inner anyone or anything that could get me up that. Probably not down in one piece, either.

I was wondering what the heck you were planning on riding with that very aggressive Knolly, now it all makes sense ;)

Here is my Tom Teesdale 853 HT. This was made for a shop, Norway Cycles, I believe in the Chicago area for their race team in 2012. I picked it up in 2016 and have enjoyed it since. Kind old school aggressive geo but a blast to ride.

That is a trail? It looks like your are scaling the side of a mountain. I will never get close to anything like that.

It's pretty gnarly. 3:04 is where I stopped and questioned my life choices. It's way steeper than the GoPro shows.

The Horsethief proper looks like such a fun trail. Too bad so such thing in Mid-Atlantic area.

yeah, if I were there I would be walking down.

Pipedream Sirius S5 on West Peak, Mt. Tamalpais,

Dang. That's a pretty radical looking transformation. Curious to hear about why you'd opt for one fork over the other. Also, is likely an illusion, but the current rig looks totally choppered out. Is it the same wheel placement, fork geo as the Fox setup?

I like tinkering and was curious about that particular fork. I was able to find one relatively cheaply and went for it.

The chopper look is mostly an illusion (the axle isn't in the fork legs, it's in the trailing linkage)

It's pretty close in geo BUT the axle path on the Trust does weird things as it moves (pretty good breakdown here (https://bikeco.com/trust-message-fork-review-geometry/)).

I've had the fork on 2 bikes (the one above and a Santa Cruz 5010) and enough time on it to know it's not for me. It's amazing in corners and square-edge hits, feels terrible on drops. If I was still racing XC/marathon I might stick with it but I'm not so going back to telescoping forks on my bikes.
