View Full Version : Campy lockring: can an 11t lockring be used safely on a 13t cog?

I have a 9/10s Record hub with new 10s Record 13-26 cassette. My lockring is for 11t cogs (it's about 35mm in diameter). This lockring bears entirely on the exposed portions of the spline interface of the cog, not the ridged surface on the cog that appears meant for interfacing with the similar surface on the lockring. The portions of the cog which the lockring does bear on are proud of the freehub body slightly such that tightening the lock ring seems to lock the cassette in place nicely. However, there's none of the usual 'bumpy' sensation when tightening.

I haven't been able to find any Campy documentation on this, but I have seen dead links purporting to reference such.

And from an old post here, oldpotatoe said "You CAN use a 11s lockring with a 12t cog but not vice versa."

Pics attached.

So - is this kosher or no?

I used an 11 tooth lock ring on a 12 tooth cassette by accident. over time, the cassette worked it's way loose. this was Campagnolo 11 speed.

judging from that picture, I'd give that a hard no. the lock rings are not even touching the grooved outer bit on the 13.

btw - I'm pretty sure I have the 10sp lock ring that you need.

Definite no.

Ok - thanks for the feedback! I will attempt to find another lockring locally.

Ok - thanks for the feedback! I will attempt to find another lockring locally.

If unable, I MAY have some spare 12/13t lock rings.

A related question. As I recall the 11 speed lock rings are marked "11 speed only*. What is different about them? Can you use a 9/10 lock ring on an 11 speed cassette?

No, you can't use an 11 tooth sprocket on a 12 (or 13 ) tooth sprocket. The central hole in a 12 tooth sprocket is larger than an 11 tooth lockring, so the lockring won't engage the sprocket at all. (On the other side of the coin, a 12/13 tooth lockring is so large that it will interfere with the chain if used on an 11 tooth sprocket).

Don't know why I said what I did above but Mark is correct..What happens when ya finally crawl out of the trenches, I guess.

Perhaps my question wasn't clear. I was asking whether a 27 mm 9 or 10 speed lock ring would work on an 11 speed cassette. For example a lock ring from a 12-23 ten speed cassette on an 11 speed 12-27 cassette. I know that Campagnolo added a thin compression washer to the 11 speed lock rings but is that the only difference?
