View Full Version : Is there a nice version of the old school seat clamp?

Long story... less-long... but my 1980 Miyata frame takes a 26.7mm seatpost. Not an error, that's actually what it is spec'd with originally. I turned down an alloy 26.8mm post to fit, but it takes the old school "Walmart type" seat clamp like the link below. It works fine with a cheap old steel rail seat, but I want to use my Montrose Comp saddle and the rails seem very slightly smaller than the previous cheap seat. It doesn't slide, but the saddle can tilt fore/aft a few degrees inside the clamp.

Is there a modern or nicer version of these clamps?

I know I could use a brake hone to enlarge the seat tube to 26.8 and that's still an option, but I wanted to see about the clamp first.

Nope. That style is the same it's been for 100 years.

There are plenty of modern 26.8 mm diameter clamp-top seatposts to choose from, and sand down to fit like you did before.

there are some overbuilt versions of those wald seatclamps made for bmx bikes. they are called “seatguts”. theres probably a weight penalty using them on anything but a 90s bmx bike.

VG made a nice cnc one for bmx bikes a long time ago. easier and cheaper to just turn down a 26.8 seat post with an integrated clamp IMHO

26.8mm was not an uncommon size. I have a nice Suntour Superbe on my bike. I'd find a nice 26.8mm post and see if you get lucky and it fits. If not, then honing the tube or removing some material from the post should get you there quickly.

Firefly made a custom 25.4mm seatpost for me for my Firefly. I use a shim to step the seat tube down from 27.2mm. Perhaps you could find a builder who is willing to make a 26.7mm seatpost in titanium (if ti tubes are available in that diameter)?

20 min with a piece of sandpaper and two hands and you can convert any available Ti or Al 26.8 post into what you need. Do not hone the frame to enlarge the seat tube opening, even the idea/thought is the wrong direction.

That's very much in line with what I was thinking about... but that's more than 100% of the investment already in this bike.

I see 1 old Kalloy 26.7mm post on ebay that I'll prob just go ahead and buy.

Ah, perfect then! Finding a seatpost in the correct size with the more modern clamp is the way I would go. Good luck, hope you win the auction.

Thanks, I agree on the more modern clamp being the proper solution here. I was just hoping to find a $20 version of the $5 clamp or something. I can't imagine there's TOO much competition for a 26.7mm post though.
