I am looking to try and kill the proverbial two birds. I have been looking to purchase a new bike - preferably road oriented that can sniff gravel. At the same time, my 17 year old has recently shown a tremendous interest in road cycling (we just did half of Lake Tahoe). Long story longer - I was planning on letting him use my current bike (Legend Ti 57) and me purchase a new bike - I was thinking Cervelo Caledonia.

Any thoughts on Cervelo's in general? Maybe Aspero riders out there. I know the Caledonia is so new there are most likely no high mileage reviews.

Thanks in advance.

BMC Road (https://blackmtncycles.com/product-category/frames/) –*fits 700x35 and by all accounts pretty snappy. And you don't have to worry about the carbon steerer tube failing from hidden defects (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjaivj7y6LrAhVBK80KHQxdBtMQwqsBMAJ6BAgKE BA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dmu ukpjzb5Jw&usg=AOvVaw0UNmr2_hGEgIDH63NaJ8Ql), so your son could pass it down to his son/daughter.

A steel gravel bike could be a lot of fun for your son and leave him flexibility to explore trails/touring/commuting. Of course it would be awesome to let him use the ti bike, but he's 17 and just learning the sport, he wouldn't feel the few pounds difference and may appreciate the other type of riding too! I vote Black Mountain Cycles monster cross, v-brake or discs.

Sounds like a plan.

Give your kid the old bike and get the Caledonia!

I just built up my Caledonia 5 this weekend and put 40 miles on it Sunday. All stock. Not much to report other than it feels good, looks good. I’ve got some GravelKing SKs 32 and some Bon Jons on the way to try different sizes and see what’s real.

I bought it basically for what you described. An honest appraisal of my riding and that it would likely be 70% road/rough roads and 30% hardpack single track or fine gravel.

If you're both up for it, could be a cool time to buy a frame and do a build together.

Jonbek- if you don't mind me asking, what build , color did you get? Don't happen to be in the Bay Area do you?
