This is up for sale near me for the equivalent of about $US 1k give or take a few dollars. Assuming it's in the sort of condition that the seller says - is that a fair price for the bike and is it worth taking a closer look at?

Any of the resident Merckx experts care to chime in?

I. had a predecessor to that bike - G2x I think - and really liked it. There's and. old thread on. VSalon: https://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum/f2/merckx-carbon-mxm-specifically-opinions-1963.html

I think this is one of the models after Merckx sold the company. The components look solid although appear to be 10-speed era. Don't know if that's a factor to you. The amount of headset spacers may be a bit excessive. If you like it, I'd definitely check it out. It seems like an okay buy to me considering the components it has.

Clicking that link now leads to a rather janky looking setup with a bent up fork.

Thanks, updated it.

Despite the sketchy looking setup there's a lot of bike there, I suspect. Those Eurus wheels are the old ones with high tensioned steel spokes - rock solid and no G3 lacing.

Thats in aud i guess so only about a 1000 in usd.

With those components if u like the bike that cant be all that expensive but its likely not a bargain either. Its priced pretty fairly imo.

Have no experience with eddy carbon frames so cant speak of the actual ride qualites.

They were great frames back in the day. I believe made in Italy, possibly by Pinarello. That said, it's a 15 year old carbon frame with components just as old. I personally wouldn't purchase a used carbon bike without knowing the history of it, etc. For $1000 USD, I don't think the price is that far off, especially in OZ where the market for things seems more expensive. $800-900 you're getting a great deal. $1000 is still pretty good. Again, assuming all is in good condition.

Yes these I believe were made in Italy by a third party (not Pinarello) for Merckx. Regardless of where made, its an old somewhat generic molded frame with Merckx's name slapped onto it. With outdated components and an old training wheelset.
I'd take a solid pass. Just my .02.

Bike seems to be priced fairly, but it's certainly not a great bargain. I personally wouldn't buy it at that price, and I'd expect to lose a few hundred dollars if I tried to resell it, but if the bike speaks to you and you think you'd have fun riding it, it's probably fine.

I probably had as much input into the design and production of this bike as Eddy Merckx did.

Exactly.

I think the scandium Team SC bikes from 15 or so years ago were prob some of the last really great bikes with Eddy's name on them.

Thanks for all the input. It looks like things aren't going to stack up financially for me to be able to pursue this any further after all.

I couldn't agree more.
