100 degrees in Smokeland. Steamin. The best antidote: some crisp, clean, hoppy IPA. Whatcha got? Hopefully something I don’t know! Paging pdmtong!

Here’s my evening edge-off. Never had it before. Light and refreshing, but I like things a little hoppier.

And an appropriate soundtrack: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5IsSpAOD6K8

Temescal's IPAs are pretty dang good.

But usually I'm only drinking temescal if I cant get Cellarmaker.

For non-IPA recommendations for hot as heck drinks Im really loving the Shacksbury Lo-Ball and temescals "pink flamingos"

Also, hot take but I think Russian rivers helles lager “velvet glow” is their best beer.

So hot today, my son rode up Mt Tam in his skivvies before dawn.

Other contributions here is last year a buddy and I rode to the top of Sequoia/Kings canyon NP on a jeep road and then down all the way to Cedar Grove. It was an epic adventure. We were smart enough to stash some Pliny's at the top of the 6000+FT jeep road climb the day before (we drove up via the highway). So after little food and little water we drank these Pliny's to rehydrate and descend a treacherous canyon descent.

That might be changing soon as there is a worldwide Al can shortage. In the interim, here’s an article about cans vs bottles.

I actually prefer a gose if it’s hot out. Lower ABV and a touch of salt and acidity make it much more refreshing than an IPA.

I've always found Pliny delicious, and the taste not like other DIPA. It and heady topper are the only beers I will drive to get. Knee Deep's Breaking Bud is my Von's pick, melvin if they are out.

I've not yet had Pliny for Pres., but it is double dry hopped, which tends to be hazy.

Too often hazy beers I've tried are high fruit forward. If I wanted a beer that tasted like grapefruit or whatever, well, I don't. To each his own I guess.

Now, if you get a chance to try that good of the public, it is a hint peachy, and VERY light drinking for an IPA, hence for me perfect after a hot mtb ride--small heat wave out here in san diego area, so mine will soon be gone.

I suppose I should relate a personal story as a PSA.

Several years ago I was in the local liquor store and saw something that was described as a double IPA. Well, I like IPA, so why not double down? Makes sense, right? Being somewhat frugal, I always buy cases since that's more cost efficient than buying by the six pack.

I took the case home, stuck it in the fridge in the megashed (1500 sf).

A weekend or two later I was working out there and cracked one open. Tasty. Strong. Good.

Went about working outside in the vegetable garden, various projects in the shed, mowing the grass, etc.

Not long after drinking two beers, 12oz each, I thought, "Hey, I feel kinda drunk."

Pretty soon I decided, "Yeah, I'm kinda drunk, and I've still got a lot of work to do."

I checked the label. It was over 12% ABV. Apparently double hops means double alcohol. Eventually I gave away 3 six packs and finished one myself.

Moral of the story - read the label before buying, and especially before drinking.

12% is barelywine territory, and not even a triple IPA. I actually stopped drinking double IPAs at home (mostly) cuz it's too easy to crack a second or even third 16oz can and have a sluggish morning. That said, my current fav in NYC is KCBC's Superhero Sidekick DIPA. Haven't been too impressed with Other Half lately but maybe I'm burned out after 5 years of it. But I can't wait for their collabs to restart.

Yes beware. ABV > 8% is a recipe for staggering. That’s why RRB limits the Younger to three per person. Believe me you really shouldn’t drink more than that

The President is a bit more citrus. Not fruity. Must be the hop used?

Not sure I really agree with Strong IPAs/DIPAs and hot weather.

If I'm dehydrated at all they just destroy me with the high ABV and lots of hops.

And if you're a skinny cyclist who got that way by not drinking much and riding a lot your tolerance is super low.

Last weekend I had a Heady Topper and it just completely wrecked me.. upset stomach, felt really drunk, up all night, and felt like I had a hangover the next day.

Maybe something was bad with it.. 3rd one in a 4-pack and the first 2 didn't do that to me nearly as bad, but it's the highest ABV and highest IBU beer I've had in recent months and it's starting to seem like too much for hot weather.

No expert in exactly what makes a NZ IPA (maybe some of the hops have to be from NZ?), but this one is on the lower end of the ABV scale for an IPA (6.0%), slightly citrusy without being overpoweringly fruity, has almost none of the resin hop flavor, and a hint of creaminess. Think NE Hazy style, but maybe with the volume turned down 2 notches.

https://i.ibb.co/k8Lqkbs/dogfish-60-2.jpg

Y'know, I've been an IPA fan for longer than I've been an avid recreational cyclist...IPAs were my favorite beers as far back as the mid-1980s when the only one I could find with any regularity was Harpoon. But I never could get the appeal of Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA

...until I discovered it as a post-ride beverage! Now it's one of my first choices after a long day in the saddle. Something about the combination of exercise-induced thirst & exhaustion really compliments whatever's going on with the Dogfish 60.

But my current favorite IPA, the one that I would choose if someone held a gun to my head and said "You can only ever drink one brand of IPA ever again" would be Lawson's Sip Of Sunshine (https://www.lawsonsfinest.com/beers/sip-sunshine/)
https://www.lawsonsfinest.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/SOS_V2.jpg

The problem is, at 8%ABV it's not a practical post-ride beverage unless your ride ends at home!

Incidentally, ~20 years ago my favorite IPA was Brooklyn Brewery's East India IPA (https://brooklynbrewery.com/brooklyn-beers/year-round/east-ipa/). But with so many micro-breweries making their wares more available over the ensuing years I stopped drinking the Brooklyn. Just this past weekend I picked up a couple six-packs for a post-ride socially-distant BBQ, and it reminded me something that I'd forgotten:

So many of the modern IPAs are all about all the extra "stuff" ...e.g., they're Hazy or Juicy or Double-Hopped or Citrusy or Pine Cone-y or whatever... and the Brooklyn East India IPA is just plain Good Drinkable Beer. Nothing extra. Tasty, flavorful, but it doesn't taste like a fruit bowl or an evergreen forest, it just tastes like IPA. I may have to start buying this again.

Double IPA

Double IPAs (also referred to as Imperial IPAs) are a stronger, very hoppy variant of IPAs that typically have alcohol content above 7.5% by volume. The style is claimed to have originated with Vinnie Cilurzo, currently the owner of Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California, in 1994 at the now-defunct Blind Pig Brewery in Temecula, California.

Every year during the two weeks of PtY either Vinnie or his wife Natalie or both of them walk the line of everyone waiting. They thank everyone for showing up and supporting PtY They made a big commitment to the Santa Rosa economy with the new brewery and are on the front lines of disaster support. It's easy to be a fan of the beer and the two of them.

With the additional brewing capacity, PtE is now more readily available and as such the scarcity marketing aspect is [thankfully] fading. Having case of PtE is no longer currency, just beer. Really great beer!

So I had one of these yesterday after reading this thread. It was inside the fridge when I bought a medley of beers hosting a poker game last year.

Maybe it was the hot weather, but I actually enjoyed it. Perhaps there is hope for me with hoppy beer.

NBD. Stupid incompetent bike mechanic* didn’t tighten the seat clamp. Started tilting during the ride. Couldn’t fix with my mini tool. (*I built up the bike).[emoji23]

Did you have the PfP shipped or were you able to get it locally? Curious. It's not in stores around here. Mine was from the brewery direct. Some days I think I like it a bit more than PtE - the PfP is brighter and has that hops driven floral/citrus that is very refreshing without being overly fruity.

Picked up a few 4 packs last week when I was at the Santa Rosa location.

Enjoying PfP, PtE, and especially Happy Hops.

Up in Maine for two weeks hiking in Acadia - glorious as usual. Stopped at Maine Beer company on the way up to score a case of Dinner and six bottles of Second Dinner. Glad I got the case of Dinner but only six bottles of Second Dinner, and not vice-versa (even though they have only brewed Second Dinner once this year and it’s obviously rarer in that way). But I much prefer the extreme bitterness of Dinner on top of the hop bomb!

Suspect the first picture might evince what caused the mechanic's distraction from his task.

Popped this open after a whole bunch of stair repeats. Light and refreshing, but missing that really "hoppy" signature of good IPAs.

Not part of the fancy crowd by any means, but one of the better mass produced IPAs that are readily available:

My taste buds are very happy that Treehouse Cape Cod has opened for pickup sales. My wallet not so happy  That's King Julius but I think I prefer regular Julius. All of their IPAs are fantastic!

Maiden trip down my gullet. Very nice!

Not an IPA, but really hits the spot when the temps hit 90 plus.

I hate IPA period.
For me its German Hefeweizen or Dunkel.
Sometimes a Porter or Stout.

Hefeweizen is German for “Bud Lite.” 😉

And a Stout on a hot day? You must be a glutton for punishment.

Grossly unfair. Deutschland doesn’t produce any beer as nasty as Bud, and on a hot day something like a lager or pilsner is much more quenching than an IPA hop bomb.

Hazy little thing and Big little thing from Sierra Nevada were on the menu for me this weekend.
