Hey, I have a front wheel with the OG pacenti SL23 rim. It had the common issue with rattle, and I actually corresponded with Kirk Pacenti years ago about how to fix it by "re-pinning" the sleeve by putting a skrewdriver on the pin joints and whacking it with a hammer.

I heard the tick sound again last week and tried that method again but missed just outside that sleeve and punched a hole in the inner rim. I know that is not a main support part since it has spoke holes, but I wanted to make sure it is safe until I might rebuild it.

I replaced my 2 sets of SL23s with the Forza model. The new owners were giving a discount to SL23 owners. Might be worth looking into.

thanks! I actually remember talking with Kirk Pacenti about this a few years ago and dug through my emails. I think the first time i did this I poked through and sent him a picture, and he said it was no problem. I probably just hit the same hole and made it a bit bigger.

I will check into the new forza though!

Intellectually speaking, I'd have no concern about its ride-ability/safety.

HOWEVER

My OCD/paranoia/anxiety would get the best of me about it until I replaced it.

I think that extra hole would be no problem BUT, there have been enough stories about pacenti rim design and QC, I think I would look elsewhere. PLUS, I don't think Kirk has anything to do with pacenti anymore(sold it)..

DT, Velocity, H+Son, HED, Kinlin..lots of other great choices out there.

It's safe. Seriously. The valve hole and nipple holes are larger and goes through the same part of the rim bed.

if this is the same issue i had it sounded like a little piece of something or other was rolling around inside the rim?

My feelings exactly!!

thanks! I appreciate your opinion. I have had decent luck with the front wheels I built with SL23 wheels, and have about 5 years on both of them. The rears have not fared as well. I might replace this with a Kinlin xr26t, or XC279 if I don't mind the weight gain. The ERD should be pretty close with both of those to be able to use the same spokes.

true!

It was the sleeve pin joint that was rattling.

I think I might ride on it a bit, because as it was said, the spoke hole and valve hole are bigger, but maybe keep an eye out for a kinlin rim to replace it.

If it is a V1 28h, I have a friend with a few extra on the wall new.

I had this IIRC. Dropped some tubular glue into a spoke hole and let the loose thing find the glue. Let it cure for a day or two. Problem solved.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I checked with Pacenti, and they offered$25% off a Forza rim. I decided to go with a Kinkin Xr26t as a replacement instead. It was cheaper and had a closer Erd to the SL23, and I like working with the Kinlin rims

yeah that's exactly what i did too maybe it would work for the op if that was the issue. it has been gone for years now but i still don't like mounting tires on this rim and look forward to replacing them.

are the kinlins easier to mount tires on?

Turns out there was a crack. Hopefully replacing with the kinlin fixes the issue
