Festival International, in Lafayette LA. Normally held in the spring, but not this year. Musicians from Somalia, Guatemala, Morocco, Mongolia, Belgium, Canada, Russia, Haiti...

Alsarah and the Nubatones were there as well. Sudan. The vocal track clears up at about 1:30 or so.

I love music threads.

Mdou Moctar is incredible live (when that’s going to allowed who knows)

I think it’s safe to say anything on Chris Editions label is going to be fantastic.

Chrissy Zebby Tembo
Ngozi Family
Sweet Breeze
Blackfoot
K Frimpong

This band Fulu Miziki from DRC makes all their instruments and clothing from recycled material.

If you like this kind of music Strawberry Rain is a great reissue label.

I’m most fluent in psychedelic, Zambian rock and west African funk but always love learning about more

Or like Rokia Traoré, who plays a mean blues guitar and sings with both softness and power - say in this video of hers: https://youtu.be/3DydY8bHTyg

I think the first I heard was the Pipes of Pan, recorded Brian Jones ages ago, and then quite young saw live the dervishes at Konya.

Tinariwen are great, all their albums, and are really great live.

Among European/American "discoverer ambassadors", Ry Cooder (both 'Buena Vista Social Club' and this Ali Farka Toure collaboration below, is so much more interesting than people like Paul Simon, etc.

Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=1XUloEaR1RM&feature=emb_logo)

But, there are many and it is no surprise.

It does seems pretty unfair though to compare all of "middle east and west africa music" to "euro/us pop". What does "pop" mean even? Euro/US pop, at least in my own definition of "pop" music, is insipid and terrible compared to almost any music at all.

Some other fun stuff:

And a personal favorite: Nicki Wells. Stunning British woman with a voice that is just...just...amazing. Did/does a lot of collaboration with Nitin Sawhney.

And this....wowwwwwww..... Niki Wells soaring vocals and Mohini Day on bass. This deserves to be cranked LOUD. Dummer just might take inspiration from JoJo Mayer 20, is almost electronic in his beat/timing.

Good time to shout out the great label Sahel Sounds.

https://sahelsounds.bandcamp.com

And today is a Bandcamp Friday, meaning that Bandcamp is waiving their fees so for any music bought today, all of the money goes to the artists/label. To make it even crazier, Sahel sounds made all their downloads 'Name your own' price till midnight! Nuts.

There's tons of great West African music from Sahel Sounds, but here's two recommendations:

Les Filles de Illighadad--so good, saw them in Providence last November... One of very few female groups playing Tuareg-style music.

https://lesfillesdeillighadad.bandcamp.com/album/eghass-malan

Etran de L'Air--The energy and spirit is so strong with this one. Great lp.

Not African/Middle Eastern, but since other posts have wandered to India I thought I'd offer these:

John McLaughlin's collaborations with Shakti and Zakir Hussain have flourished for over 40 years. It's been my "desert island" music ever since the first time I heard it as a teenager.

absolutely. mclaughlin is amazing, the mahavishnu orchestra works he did were great!

interesting related note: derek trucks has a unique indian music influence, which he attributes to his friendship and classes with ali akbar khan. i think trucks is the most exciting american guitarist in a long time, def. at the top for the memory books. he cites so many musical influences across so many genres. he's an off-the-charts blues player, and so much more. i've got a video on youtube where he was playing in a blues collaboration with b.b. king, who literally, and with genuine sincerity, says he never heard anything better. man, that's a better prize than any music industry award right there.

as an example: listen to the intro of this for the first 2.5 minutes or so. just amazing.

Warning - thread drift.

Moving away from the Middle East and West Africa, I'll toss out throat singing, which I'm sure others have heard of as well. Throat singers can make two sounds simultaneously - a lower droning note and a higher whistling note (see 5:50-9:00 in the video). From the Mongolia/Tuva region.

I've seen some live. Huun Huur Tu is the best known example in the U.S.

Fast forward to about 5:50 for the throat singing.
