Shimano Cleat Replacement

I have Shimano PD-R540 road pedals bought used because they were advertised as coming with a set of new SL cleats.
For my vintage Look patent pedals are on older bikes and these were to go on new shoes.
Problem is I can hardly clip in or out with this setup and cannot determine the current compatible replacements to order. Search with google and Amazon doesn't seem offer anything different.
I'm running mountain spd until I can find fitting cleats.
These didn't used to be complicated did it?

if these are the pedals you have, the current generation spd-sl cleats will work with them. i dont understand what you mean by cant clip in or out. there is only one type of SPD-SL cleat out there, although two variations, blue and yellow tipped, with changes the release angle.

Don’t they change the float rather than release angle? Also red for 0 degrees of float.

For what it’s worth, those specific pedals have a pretty poor interface with their own cleats, which is kind of a huge design flaw.

I have a pair of the 540's and only use SPD-SL pedals. The 540's are ok, I have the release tension at the lowest setting, there release/engagement is as good as my other Shimano pedals.

This. When I used to run those pedals I ended up also setting them to the lowest release tension. They were stiff.

Sorted on SL now and ordering a set of blue medium float to replace yellow.
Hope these will work better with my Torch boa's.
