Sent wrong wheelset: bad, good, neutral?

I ordered a bike from a manufacturer that also sells direct. We went through the build kit part by part, and I was supposed to get DT Swiss E1800 wheels. Instead, the bike that arrived today came with HED Ardennes, the RA Performance Disc model I’d guess, the lowest end HED road wheels.

So, before I call them tomorrow about the discrepancy, what’s your take on HED Ardennes RA Performance vs. the DT Swiss E1800 wheels?

This is for a new bike that, to use marketing terms I’m not crazy about, could be slotted into the adventure bike/endurance bike realm. I picture mainly riding it on roads from smooth to gnarly to unpaved.

The E1800s uses DT Swiss' standard 3-pawl system, so its not like you're getting the high-end DT swiss either. I'd say the two wheelsets are comparable in terms of quality levels. They're both pretty decent wheelsets. With this bike market, probably hard to get a hold of parts anyway and they had to make a substitute. Not sure a phone call would get you a different wheelset, but it might get you a slight refund. :)

i am particularly sensitive to freehub engagement and all things being close to equal i'd want to know which set had the best engagement. also Hed makes a dizzying number of models of wheels and i have at times found it difficult to determine what parts make up which wheels.

does look as if the Heds have a much higher retail price compared to the DTs.

MSRP on the HED wheels is $750, MSRP on the DT Swiss wheels is $500. Weight is comparable. HED wheels are a little wider and shallower. Both are good wheels. They were probably out of stock on the DT Swiss wheels, and gave you a small "upgrade."

I definitely wouldn't complain about the swap. You got good wheels, just ride 'em.

Ah, it's the marketing term for the category that I don't like. Hey, I'm not crazy about the term "gravel" bike either. I've heard people, the kind of people who don't hang out here but who would enjoy such a bike, say they don't ride on gravel, so why buy.

But the bicycles themselves, drop bar bikes that are better than traditional road bikes when the ground ain't so smooth -- love it!

I'd say the HEDs are an upgrade.

At the moment I would guess manufacturers are fully taking advantage of the "specifications subject to change" clause in their marketing.

Bike shops literally cannot get inner tubes right now.

Those were my thoughts as well. Oh well, the bike is here, and the wheels I have are fine.

I’m finishing it off (my own bar tape and accessories), and hope to take it for its shake-down ride on Friday.
