has anyone found a really good, warm hat for really cold days (below freezing)? windstopper seems to help everywhere else. is there a hat out there with windstopper that fits under a helmet? TIA!

I use a cheapo Performance balaclava. It works quite well - I've used it mountain biking in single digit temps.

I use on by Burton; not windstopper but some protective barrier sandwiched between very thin fleece covering ears and lower skull/forehead with mesh over top of skull. This has been the best compromise I've found. Much better than the lycr peral izumi style, better fitting than for instance the assos cap. Thin enough to stick a cycling cap over top to keep extra heat in if necessary. I got a Rapha winter cap (wool) for christmas which is really nice but on really cold days my ears still get cold in it - too much ventilation passing through.

Climb-o, I just got in from a nice 2 hour ride. My hup-pal, Stephen, gave me a sweet gift this fall. It is a hat from Capo Forma (http://www.uplandsg.com/). 73% wool, super-comfy, and my head was not at all cold today. Not that today was bad weather-wise, but it was chilly. It fits very nicely under my brain-bucket. 5 stars in my book.

The Rapha winter hat is excellent--my most used xmas gift to date.

Never used...just saw them in the recent catalog...a couple rides in the low 30's has me thinking this might be a good idea.

I have one, it works fine and used in low 30's (doesn't get much colder here so I don't much lower it would work). It is made of polyester with windstopper material on the front 1/3 to protect the noggin from the wind. It covers the ears nicely. I would recommend it. As I recall it was about $20.

I'm a bald buy which makes me an expert in all head gear and as a baldy, that Capo Forma looks like the goods. However, I bet you already own everything you need to solve the problem. I have a Zank beanie and I pull a basic cycling cap over it for really cold days. The Zank hat insulates and covers the ears, the cycling cap blocks the wind, the helmet keeps it all in place.

At freezing to about 25 I'll wear an ear band and a cycling cap under the helmet that does not have a cover. From 25 if its dark and cold I'll wear a balaclava under the helmet.

At 10 I'll add the earband over the balaclava.

6F is my coldest measured ride (on a bike here in OK.) and my head was warm, however I've found that layering properly on the core is very important.

This morning I just wore a wool nordic cap and it was 23 and blowing hard from the north.

Have fun and stay warm.

I found a great Windstopper liner at Eddie Bauer for about $10. It stops the wind but I also can't hear a dang thing when I have it on. A true benefit when riding with one's wife. She didn't hear that did she?
