Follow up question: 650c tubes for 650b?

I got a bunch of 622/700c tubes. Not a single tube for 584/ 650B though. So I thought perhaps I could use the 700c tubes in the 650B.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being really idiotic), how inadvisable is this?

dont do that.

now 26" mtb tubes, is OK and even most tubes are advertised as cross compatible.

I have some first hand experience here, having once grabbed the wrong tube prior to a ride.

It doesn't work, unless your goal is to use Uber/Lyft.

Following up from the original question, what about 650c tubes (18-25 mm) in a 650b? 650b has a rim diameter of 584 mm; 650c is 571 mm. Not a lot of places have a tube that's 584 mm x 18-25 mm, thus making me wonder if I could get by with 650c.

This will work fine. The wider the tire the thinner the tube is stretched so more susceptible to punctures and tears, but it'll work. 559 tubes are also fine as stated above and, pre-pandemic, 26x1.75" ultralight tubes were easy to find. That's what I used with 650bx42mm tires back when I used tubes.

That'll work. Generally using 'smaller' tube in a 'bigger' tire works ok..the rubber gets thinner but it'll work. I know a guy who carried 26in MTB tubes for his 29er, 'cuz they were lighter'..true story.

What you want is tubes labeled for 559 (mountain bike 26"). Depending on the brand -- because they vary -- you want either the 1.25 - 1.5" or the 1.5-1.75" width for 38-42mm wide tires.

You want to watch out for excessive width because it's virtually impossible to stuff a too-wide tube into a tire and not get a flap of tube caught under the bead, which when inflated will cause an explosive blowout.

Generally, 700C tubes are just too large. And 650C -- as mentioned in the thread title -- are all wrong (much too narrow). But I suspect that's a typo.

Do you have a 650B tire that's 18-25mm wide? I suppose they may exist (although I can't understand why) but if you try to use a tube that narrow in a 38-42mm tire it's going to be stretched way too thin.

Understood. Using 26 tubes in a 29er? Yikes. I hope the guy is riding tubeless these days.

Understood. 584 x 38-42 tubes are actually a lot easier to find

This is for my wife, who finds the 700C wheels just a bit unstable when standing. Granted, she only started riding "real bikes" last year, and it may just a thing that needs adaptation. Though on her commuter bike (which has 700 x 35 tires but a lower saddle position), she's a lot more comfortable when stopped at a light.
