Random question, what are your thoughts on carbon cranks and silver chainrings?

I recently got my hands on a minty campy 2014 Athena 11speed in silver. It came with a 50-34 power torque crankset but was thinking of getting a standard crankset 53-39 as well. Saw this deal on ebay for a 2011 Athena carbon Ultra-Torque crankarms, and was wondering how it would look like on silver chainrings! Given it's a neo-retro build, the idea was to go with silver components...which I already have.

Thanks!

A few things here:
Early Campagnolo carbon cranks used silver chainrings. Looked great.
Ultra torque uses no special tools for install or removal.
Power torque needs a bearing puller to remove
Both need a puller to remove the bearings (same Park tool kit can be used for above)

I’ve never seen aftermarket power torque bottom brackets but they do exist for ultra torque. That said, ultra torque has the bearings on the crank so I don’t see an advantage to the aftermarket options unless you are dealing with a press fit frame and want a “conversion” that threads the two sides together.

Hey, thanks for answering all my questions! Sounds good, will probably look around for the UT crankset. :)

Yeah, it's a thing.

This actually took much more work to accomplish than I anticipated... but worth it.

My goodness, is it weird that this is the happiest I've felt all week after seeing these cranks?

not at all!

i can recommend the Stronglight rings too, they are nicely made and affordable.

i know the colored chainring bolts are not to everyone's taste though!

Ooohh... it works just perfect. Carbon, silver, classic light blue paint on small diameter steel, lugs and that sublime band w/ logo topping it all.
Post of the month.

Was looking out for the sublime logo (the ska-punk band), then realized what you meant. Agree that the light blue lugged steel is sweet.

Think my new build will be something along that tone of blue. I was also thinking if I should email Paul and change my build order to a lugged Lobster. I don't see many lugged lobsters around...

Tough to find but worth it if you do.

Not a 'glamour shot', but at least in its element...

And yes, it now has bar tape. Finally.

For sure! Just started on my first job after graduating, and I found vintage seikos to be of really good value. My grail will one day be an explorer 1016...though the prices are increasing exponentially...

My 216570 is currently getting serviced. I would love to add a 1655 but I can’t justify it. I’ve been wearing a cheap Vostok while the other is out.

Yes, glad I found this thread!

Is there a good U.S. source for Stronglight stuff? Peterwhite?

I thought this looked rad at the time. I've thought about putting silver potenza rings on a chorus crank.. could look pretty fun.

Just curious, for those that are using 10 speed Chorus/Record, and want silver cranks/chainrings, what options are there? I love the look of the 10-speed cranks, even DA 7800 cranks, but it seems like I'm stuck with 53/39.

Do yall ride standard cranks??

I'm about to do the same thing on the Olmo. I think it will look ok if you balance things out.

I've already got two built along those lines, just not as much silver as the Olmo will wind up with.

This is sporting even more black.

No, but trying to find this 2006 era Centaur CT compact with chrome chainrings is really tough.

So... moving onto a workaround of sorts...

For the Goodrich, I found a NOS 10 spd 2014 era Centaur carbon compact that came standard with the pressed black rings and substituted some NOS forged chrome rings I found on the 'Bay. Wasn't quite a drop-in , but close enough. And even though the rings are '10 spd', they work great with an 11 spd drivetrain.

And they look good. :D

Very nice examples here! I guess my alternative would be to use 11 speed chorus carbon compact cranks with Athena 11 speed silver cranks.

Came across another option here - I have a set of their 'RX' road hubs and they've been pretty bomb proof - i've ridden lots of gravel, submerged them, and they keep on rolling...
