I had a quick question for the group about 2007 or 2008 Centaur QS shifters. I was considering purchasing this groupset locally (minus the crank and seatpost) for $200-220.

I was wondering (a) if Centaur QS shifters were still a good buy and (b) if they would work just fine with the earlier non-QS Record front derailleur.

My understanding is that QS levers work fine with any FD. Non-QS levers still work ok with QS FD, but in my experience could take 1.5 lever throws to get up onto the big ring.

I had those same shifters on my cross bike and loved them, they shifted so fast and I never had a problem. I think Simoni used them in the Giro because they were actually lighter than record.

Never noticed between qs and non qs, just being honest.

The front shifter will work with any front derailleur because it's simply a ratcheting shifter.

Over the years I've used Campy Ergo shifters with non-STI 105, non-STI Ultegra, non-Ergo Campy, and then various generations of Ergo Campy front der. With that generation shifter I've used mainly Campy front derailleurs, all generations, no problems. I even went to the newer shift lever shape (Record/Chorus then Athena/..? Centaur?) without changing front derailleurs. I went to the lower shifters to get the single click rear downshifts so I wouldn't shift more than one gear higher at a time.

Thanks, everyone. It sounds like these are still winners even though they only shift one gear up at a time? That is my main concern, even though I am using Athena right now.

I ran those before switching to 11. They were fantastic.

Still have them.... should sell em.

2007/8 Centaur(and Veloce) levers are 'PowerShift', not 'UltraShift', using the post 2009 terms. They are one higher gear at a time RH lever thumb button with a somewhat positional LH lever/FD ala shimano(altho more better). They WILL work fine with any front der but the shift guts, actually from the lowly Xenon levers, can be kinda fragile. This shifter guts re-emerged in 2011 for Athena and below..some of the same issues but were made more robust in 2015(droopy thumb button)...

Now, 2005 and older UltraShift levers are the same as Record and Chorus and the 'QS' really didn't mean much of anything. A little more precise FD shifting but that's all.

IF the thumb button goes thru a hole in the hood and not thru a 'slot' in the hoods, they are Xenon based innards..have a picture?
See the pictures and those are indeed Xenon based innards..

Thanks, Peter! I was originally going to message you directly, so I’m glad you saw this. If you say there are better buys, especially for the long term, I’ll really defer to that.
