After 14 years, our wonderful tandem is going to be overhauled. First up is a new front end.

A Wound Up caliper fork will be ordered tomorrow.

What I need is a new threadless 140 stem.

I could go with a custom steel stem painted to match so if someone has a framebuilder they can recommend that makes stems, please let me know.

The other option is to go with a standard threadless stem. I know that the Time Monolink is fairly stiff but that stem might be a bit big visually for the more svelte steel tubes.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I don't know how stiff they are compared to other 140 stems, but I have used a Deda Newton 31.8 140 mm stem on my Merckx Ti for a couple of years and it seems OK. It has Pro racing credentials at least.

Another possibility is the fact that there seem to be a bunch of Cinelli Grammos floating around in cyberspace. This one is 140 mm and seems good, though it is anchored to a steel steerer.

I would think a tandem is the ideal place for a steel for and maybe a steel stem, so I think the Kirk stem idea is a good one.

I did not know that Thomson made a 140. If so, cool.

well the thomson IS available in a 140 with a 15* rise- you could always flip it over-

Ive never used THIS stem- but most 3t products are at least OK-

scroll down and look at the silver 3t 2x2

I've broken two newton 140's, so be careful there? Also another buddy did his 110 this summer. I have given up on the foofy stuff when comes to stressy parts. I've since been using Deda's cheapo forged jobs with alot of success! They are way stiffer and seem stronger. Deda Qautro and an Ultra Carbon, same stem just the Ultra has a fake carbon finish. Not sure if 140's are too easy to find in the US if you want to try them, but the $30 to $60 price tag make the search worth it IMO.

I've got a thomson 140 on my merckx majestic, good and stiff. Or you could call sasha at vanilla and have a steel one made.

I have a 130mm Stella Latte stem that is quite stiff, and my brother has the Stella Vicaversa stem that is so heavy and over built that you could use it bludgeon a large animal to death.
