But I keep seeing this kind of dialog in ads.

"Purchased with the intention of adding an “All Road” bike to my stable but then realized I don’t need a 3rd road bike just to fit 700x30 tires."

Whuuuuutt? :bike:

I didn't seriously want one until I got one.

clearly an intervention is required...that is *precisely* when bike N+1 is called-for!

I can tell you from personal experience that 32c tires pumped up to 'not much' are a magic carpet ride on the broken, potholed, decaying things that we call roads out here outside Manassas, VA

That is really spousal abuse via hypnotism in play I suspect...

That's why you need at least 35mm before it's just a road bike with room for bigger tires :bike:

Just got home from a 20 miles ride of dirt and pavement.

On my "all road" bike with 38mm tires.

Love it.

is there anyone currently offering an all-road bike with only enough clearance for 30mm tires?

The OPEN MIN.D is close at 32mm, though it's considered their road bike? The marketing copy confuses me.

I think 30mm is considered pure road. It generally seems all road means fitting 35mm or wider.

I added an all-road Gravel disc bike to my stable 2 years ago. It has many purposes and became my bring-along bike for holidays and on business trips (meaning I don't know what type of riding surfaces and opportunities to expect). If I was forced to go down to just one bike, something like it would probably the choice because it is a jack of many trades.
When I ride on paved roads, I still prefer my racing bikes more direct feel, more agile handling and lower weight.

Do I need the disc brakes? Absolutely not. They are on the bike because it would have been too much hassle to find a bike of that kind without them and it would have decreased any resale value. After two years of use I'd rate them as unnecessary and sometimes even annoying - they tend to make annoying noises and it was a pain in the *** to clean the extremely sticky mud out of them after the last messy ride.

Just to clean the air a little and to focus my facetious intent.

I had Carl Strong build me a Steel All road Disc frame/fork in 2015. It'll fit 2.1 x 650b, and easily 40x700, as big as I'd go 700 wise. Not a big fan of too big a 700, makes stuff get trucky steering response. Even converted my Gary 29er to 650b years ago and never looked back... A real trucky thing...

'All Road' does not equal 'Road'...bike. Some of us just ride on the ass-felt, no dirt, thanks. No trendy, fat tire, 1by, disc, 700/650 convertible, bike..just a road bike...:)

Guess what size 700 x 32c equates to?

g'head guess

If you didn't answer 27 x 1 1/4" (ish) you'd be incorrect. The more things change, the more they stay the same

My only* bike is an allroad bike - 650b x 47. Looking to add a pure road bike with 700 x 28 don't care if that one has discs or not. Seems like a reasonable two bike stable if you're not doing mountain biking. The 650b x 47 can do some singletrack when called upon.

*I actually have two other bikes, a hybrid that my wife uses and a flat bar conversion touring bike that is for groceries and baby hauling.

Don't all the major manufacturers top end disc race bike (Tarmac, Emonda, TCR, etc) accommodate 30s now? I think 30 is normal road.

This is what I was going to say. Once fork manufacturers could dispense with the hole for the caliper, it leaves a lot more room for a tire. The axle-to-crown height of the Enve road disc fork is 370mm—3mm taller that the 1.0/2.0 fork for caliper brakes, but still a couple of mm shorter than many road forks for caliper brakes (e.g., 372mm for the old Reynolds Ouzo Pro, etc.). The Enve road disc fork has clearance for 32mm tires, whereas the 1.0/2.0 could just fit 28s (and it was one of the most generous of production forks). A bike built for a fork with an a-to-c height of ~367 - 372mm is a road bike. With “normal” angles, bottom bracket drop, and relatively short chainstays, it will ride like a road bike, just with slightly bigger tires. I think of the categories as follows, based on fork span (and corresponding rear clearance):

road = ~370mm (short-reach brakes/disc)
touring/all-road/gravel = ~382 (mid-reach brakes/disc)
cyclocross/all-road+/gravel+ = 395 (cantis/disc)

In classified ads, how many times has one read questions like: “What is the largest tire the frame will fit?” “Will the frame fit 28s?” It’s as if all of a sudden 23-25mm tires are unsafe at any speed…

I built up a 2020 S Works Venge for a customer and for giggles put my wheels one there. That bike took 30mm tires with ease (tires measure 31mm). Totally ready for Paris Roubaix or even D2R2! Low gear stock is a 35F/33R.

The majority of my road rides are on 23mm tubeless or 25mm tubulars which end up about the same size.

With deteriorating roads seemingly everywhere, a roadbike that can accommodate 30mm or 32mm tires certainly makes sense to me.

I'm running 32c 5000s tubeless on my Canyon Ultimate, you can go a bit wider. They measure the same (33mm) as the previous 28c 4000sii version btw, so the "nominal" is closer to actual. Roads aren't horrible here, but I do like the ride and they're plenty fast.

LOL, not actually. ;) My Actual Roubaix Team Leopard Domane Classics has 2" more wheelbase than one of those. The teter-fest trying to run a 100CM wheelbase bike on cobbles tire you out quick.

For Smooth graved gravel, maybe. ;)

Nice looking build, you got the knack. ;)

I don't know, I've done the last 4 years of D2R2 (including the 180k), Battenkill, Hell of Hunterdon, and other various events and none of them on bikes with a 100cm wheelbase. All tighter geo with tires ranging from 23mm to 42mm tires. I prefer it.

I was all geared up that my next road bike was going to be a Titanium with discs but realised that discs don't mean that much to (yes I have them on my mtb) me and I have a lovely Campagnolo Record 10spd groupset with down tube shifters that would love a new frame to hang on...

I was thinking of another Tommasini but my dream bike is a DuNucci...

Same here, in northern Santa Barbara County. Although they're finally starting to pave some of the worst bits...

Does anyone make any aesthetically-Campag-worthy cable disc calipers? A downtube shifting disc brake set up could be.... Interesting.

I almost used them with a Campagnolo 10 downtube setup but ended up with a rim brake frame instead.

Edit:
Missed the cable comment but if using downtubes, I still vote hylex rs.

Love em or hate em but the JuinTechs saved my a$$ the other day on a switchback'd downhill road that averaged 13% for 2/3 mile.
