View Full Version : Replacement fork for Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross?

I've reached out to Mike, but thought I would tap the collective wisdom as well--
After the dumbest crash of my relatively short life (got distracted for a moment 50 feet from my house at the end of my commute after my first day back on campus and ran smack into the back of a parked car), the fork on my BMC monstercross is toast.
Is this an opportunity instead of a setback?
What options should I be looking at for a replacement?
My preference would still be to source a replacement from Mike, but I'm open to looking around. Here's what I'm looking for:
--Fenders = a must
--Clearance - bigger is better
--Brakes: likely sticking with cantis, but maybe I could be talked into a disc in front?
--Rack mounts: huge bonus, but I could get by without them, honestly.
I don't know if the numbers changed from previous versions of this bike, but the numbers currently on Mike's site are:
Fork length: 400
Fork Offset: 55
Trail: 60.8
Ideas? Thoughts?

Not sure why your budget is. But give Walt @ Waltworks in Park City a call. He’ll build you a custom fork with everything you want.
If you want cheap, I have an All City Nature Boy fork. Bought here a few years ago but never used it. Previous owner painted it matte black, it looks like. Can give it to you cheap. Specs here.

If you want to try disc, someone is selling a Surly fork on KSL that may work. Just make sure it’s not the 650b version.

What clearance did it have? A-C of 395 is the sweet spot for off the shelf availability, but that would reduce your clearance. When you change A-C, you have to worry about head tube angle and trail.
I like lots of bosses on a fork for a bike like that. Which probably means custom. On my gravel bike, I put bosses on top of the crown, mid blade front bosses for a rando style rack, low rider bosses, and bosses for an anything cage on each blade. One of the QBP brands has 2 anything cage bosses per blade. Thought about doing that and decided it didn't really make sense.

This seems like a dumb response but I would just try hard to get a replacement BMC fork - it seems like a package setup.
Glad you’re ok - many of us have had dumb wipeouts! I broke my finger outside my office by clipping my bar on a post at 1km/hr!!

Later I checked, yestersay, Mike @ BMC had one on his clearance page.

Absolutely--I feel lucky to have come out of this with a busted fork and a scraped chin, rather than the other way around.

How did I miss that! Now I'll have a fancy two-tone monstercross!
Edited: rats! The 55mm offset fork is out of stock indefinitely . . . How much of a difference can 5mm make? :)

Thanks for offering the Nature Boy fork. If I can't source a fork from Mike, that might be my second choice, as this bike is 100% utilitarian, ie, not the kind of vehicle for which I can justify a custom-built fork.

I believe when Mike changed the rake all other aspects of the front geo stayed the same, so I say you'll be absolutely fine.

Earl Glazer Cycles made me a nice custom steel fork for a reasonable price, since you're talking about opportunities [emoji4]

there was a long thread here about how noticeable 5mm rake differences might be. Summary is that opinions differ. My opinion is you won't notice it. It will have a little more flop and add a little bit of trail, so maybe feel a little less lively.

Ah yes! Thank you!
Now the question becomes . . . Black, Pink, or Green . . .

Pink. Get the color code and paint the stem to match!

Exactly this.
Except for the color.
The Blue frame with a British Racing Green BMC fork and color-matched stem would be very elegant.
I saw a pink bicycle just this AM. It looked very 2015-2017.

Absolutely!
Black: first choice, bar none.
British Racing Green: second choice, and a very fine one at that.

Is that a Gen1 v4 MX with the sloping crown? I have the same bike, how about you buy my fork and I get a pink one???

Just throwing it out there, but I have a green MCX fork with a broken canti boss that you can have for the cost of shipping.
It's an older fork, so similar to the one you have now (non-Pacenti crown).

These are both (insofar as they are serious) compelling offers. I'll reach out via PM.
