Super cool, wonder how they ride. Anyone have any long-term ownership experience with wooden frames?

There was a company making wood frames a while back. Haven't seen anything about them. I thought they were somewhat better looking than the one in the link.

Beautiful frames. Always been ccurious about longevity and how wooden frames hold up to weather and things.

Walnut is a very strong, but heavy wood. Curious as to what the weight of a frame would be? Always interested in the longevity of such frames and what kind of maintenance would he involved.

I'd love to have one just for the novelty of it. A friend of mine had one of those bamboo bikes but he kept breaking it too.

Renovo is probably the best known wooden frame maker. I have seen one in person and it was beautiful. I like this laminate idea. It is stunning but not sure it’s arced in the right direction for the best comfort.

I've had several wood frames, and still have a Renovo that I've had for over 7 years. Frame has held up perfectly. I love the look, and it rides fine for what it is, essentially a casual path bike. It is heavier that my ti or carbon frames. I also have had a Calfee bamboo frame for over 12 years, and I would say much the same about it - it has aged well, rides fine, and is actually slightly lighter than the Renovo. Photos of both are here somewhere on the forum.

That said, I'm happy with these two and have no desire for another wood frame. The aesthetics and trying something new were the impetus for the initial purchases, and for keeping them, but for anything other than casual riding bikes, I'll stick with ti/steel/carbon.

(Keep in mind that the original Renovo went out of business about two years ago, and the company currently selling Renovo wood frame bikes purchased the brand, etc. out of bankruptcy, so I have no experience with the current company/product.)

It's laminated so it's much stronger than a solid piece of wood.

maintenance = pledge

But seriously, that really is a work of art. I would love to know how it rides.

walnut isn't that heavy, it is used successfully in acoustic guitar tops. Specific strength is higher than spruce. Ash is about the same. Your comment got me to go off and look at specific strength of woods. Bubinga is a little heavy but very strong. Too bad it's CITES right now.
