Recently picked up a Kestrel off my local Craigslist for cheap and was surprised to learn that the funky purple anodized crankset on it was an original Magic Motorcycle crankset... Since I tend to be a little rough on bikes and the conditions in my area aren't the best, I'm thinking about removing the cranks before I mess them up- they're in really nice shape.

I know the arms are self-extracting, but does anyone know what tool I'll need to remove the bottom bracket cups?
Thanks.

There was a special machined alloy spanner that came with them...I have a set of the cranks and the manual + tools...

Careful as they were known to be as breakable as they were beautiful.

Any chance that special wrench is similar enough to a Sram or Shimano pattern that one of those would work?

Want to toss yours in an envelope and send it to me? I promise to return it asap.

Be careful to the extreme with the threads on the crank's outer layer section if wrenching is required. Quite strip-able...

I sold my last pair 10+ years back and the buyer summarily stripped the drive side upon install and tried to tell me they came like that from me. I have not stripped anything since I was a teen wrenching old cars.

Perishable parts. ;) Scrutiny before during and after any wrenching not optional.

Yeah- I just want to avoid wrapping a rag around the cups and using channel-locks to remove them!

Right....and if I recall correctly it is indeed a specific cup removal tool you need.

Update: I swung by my LBS and tried out a gxp bottom bracket tool and it was close enough to work- just have to be careful not to be too rough with it.

Nice pick up.

Are they the original Magic Motorcycle or the Cannondale CODA version?

Just saw this reply... They're original. 130bcd, purple anodized. Hand etched serial numbers on both crank arms and both chainrings. They're really beautiful.

In fact, too beautiful... I'm going to be selling them soon. I just know that if I ride them I'm going to mess them up and I'd hate to do that. There can't be too many of the originals around these days!
