View Full Version : Oh the humanity! a little rant

We all love this little sport of ours, and the passions sometimes unleashed.

Like steel frames. What goes better with steel frames than Campagnolo, right?
Get this: there will be no more 28.6 clamp campagnolo front derailleurs! That's right folks,
you read that correctly. It's over.

Obviously sales of parts specifically for steel bikes isn't funding the Campagnolo
family fortunes, but isn't this a sin? Call the Pope!

It's an oversized, brazed-on world out there my friends. Deal with it.
Or stock up from ebay or something. Or pop can shims....

The question is: what's next to go? 27.2 seat posts?

Oh, this one is a real can o' corn !!!

That what he gets for going with Campag. Would not be a problem with those other guys...

Based on your choices you get the leadership you deserve and you get the components you deserve.

I've been frowning ever since all the parts started turning black only. What's the world coming to. Just when I have the time to spend on bicycles Campagnolo decides to go black. And carbon. Actually, it all started when Dylan turned born-again, atmo. I bet he sent W a check. No respect. No consideration. Black is the absence of color and I'm from the color generation. I'm turning in to pray. Nite, nite, folks...

Didn't shimano stop making 28.6 clamps in mtb derailleurs
a few years ago? All the shimano ones seem to come in
35mm with a bag of shims in the box.

Our pal "Serpico" needs a Chorus-like front derailleur from 1998-2006 ish
to steal the 28.6 clamp of it.

How come Campa is putting their decal on Terraplane seat-tubes, if they are not even supplying the right-sized clamps anymore? Those damn*d EYEtalians.... :D

You edited before I got to it! MTB's from Walnut Creek was news to me!

They've always been a Shimano shop anyway...

Actually black is all colors combined. Just imagine one day you have silver parts... the next day pink etc...

that's what I'm talking about.

Shimano seems to have very few 28.6 front derailleurs too.
For triples, (with smaller than 'road' size rings, you'd use an mtb
derailleur) even shimano options are scarce.

Grant,

This has been in the works for almost a year now according to my sources at both Campagnolo and Shimano. Needless to say, I've been stocking up on ft. Der's. Sucks don't it...

Using a shim is neither a mortal sin nor a huge aesthetic no-no.

Grant, are you suggesting clamps over braze-ons for steel frames?

The only thing i'm suggesting is that it's silly to get
all sticky about a polished stainless fork crown,
weak in the knees about lug shore-lines,
and not have the proper size clamp on derailleur.

Braze on's are great. But not all builders use them
(like that sweeeet Kirk in the gallery) and if you plan
to change chainring sizes, the braze on isn't always
in the right location.

Didn't you just put Dura Ace on your new Nipponese steel frames that were made with campy dropouts?

Actually black is all colors combined. Just imagine one day you have silver parts... the next day pink etc...

Black is all colors combined for paint
Black is absence of color for light
Actually, white is all colors combined for light

That said, I've always liked black parts and used to go out of my way to black- out my mountain bikes. I guess I should watch what I wish for.

mostly. and i thk for 07 almost everything will be 35.0 w/ separate shims for other sizes.
trust me, its better.
front derailleurs are a huge money sink for mountain bikes. top swing, bottom swing, 3 diameters, all these damn fool bikes w/ pivots that wont allow normal attachment.
a dealer can stock 15 front ders and not have the one that might fit. inventory simplicity is very helpful in this.
a shim here and there is not a bad thing.

as for road bikes...less attractive i reckon. it seems an odd item to drop... lotta road bikes use this size.
atmo will have to shift to shimano or start to build carbon bike frames.
but i guess its a fact of life.
quote from atmo..." i always liked shimano better, just needed therapy to admit it, thanks swoop..."

Let's get real guys.

Using a shim is neither a mortal sin nor a huge aesthetic no-no.

Actually, it's both. It always looks like exactly what it is....a compromise solution to utilize a part that doesn't really fit.

thanks

It'll work, but I'll still need a new derailleur for it. Campy also has braze-on adapters now that they've cancelled 28.6mm.

I found a 28.6 centaur on eBay that I can swap the clamp from, but it still isn't an ideal solution.

btw, props to Problem Solvers. For an industry with such a lack of standards they've really carved out a niche. They've got some great stuff, imo.
