All over the world, iconic figures are falling. Kings, presidents, soldiers, statesmen. The question remains of which figures are unmoored from their pedestals, who gets to choose, and what replaces them.

In many cases, that point has been rendered moot. Justice has been served (or ill-served depending on one's perspective) by mob rules. Some have been removed by governmental fiat. Regardless, one thing is becoming clear: we are at a tipping point. Literally and figuratively.

Personally, I'm in favor of leaving the statues up (particularly the ones that have been damaged) and commissioning another statue in the immediate proximity to offer a different (or more truthful) narrative.

Confining the statues to a dusky museum is a form of putting a "gate" around the legacy. Obliteration is a poor remedy for reconciliation.

I think it's possible to have a civil discussion on this forum about an extremely relevant topic. Those are my hopes, at least.
