Installed new chain while messing with the drivetrain and I was wondering, how do you even remove the quick link once it "snaps" in? it seems like an impossible task.

There’s a tool that makes quick work of these links. I have one somewhere.

No pics at the moment but do a search on your favorite search engine or online retailer and you’ll see one. They’re indispensable.

You dont have a chain lock tool?

U can use regular pliers if they fit to push on the diagonal corners of the link.

I’ve been able to do with pliers and lots of cursing.

The Park tool makes it super easy! No cursing necessary...unless you wanna just let fly for no good reason.

To release, take tension off the link, Just use a piece of wire (like a old brake cable) and squeeze the link together.

To lock, put the link at the top of the drivetrain between front and rear mech and step on the pedal.

as the earlier version was fine for removing the link but would not work to re-install. to reinstall you need to slip the plier jaws between two links and then spread the handles to snap the link into place. older version was not grooved for inserting, keeping jaws in place, and pulling the handles apart.

In a pinch, you can drive the pin of a SRAM quick link out with a chain tool. I imagine you could do the same with other mfgs links as well.

I guess there is a tool for everything. It is just that when I had 10 sp the quick connect could be pushed open by hand :p

:) yeah special tools are nice but usually not needed. Pliers will do if u r in a jam.

I prefer the Shimano tool to the Park.

It really is. Take a look at the tools they make that hide in a handlebar.

I've got one of each but like the install purpose of the Shimano. Beats putting it on the ground and using my foot.

You can also use fine tipped needle nose pliers and squeeze together.

I saw a clone of that tool for a lot less money, don't remember where (ebay?).

The wolftooth pack pliers are neat for this. They even store missing links.

+1.
As stated can store 2 sets of links, tighten/loosen valve stuff plus its a tire lever.... Be careful, its metal and can damage stuff.
