NHAero

In order:
bike, year of acquisition, country of manufacture:

Bob Jackson 1972 England
Raleigh 20 1973 England
Klein Pulse II 1997 USA
Litespeed Unicoi 2005 USA
Surly Big Dummy 2009 Taiwan
Nagasawa road trainer fixed gear 2010 Japan
Anderson custom 2012 USA
Pivot 429C FS MTB 2015 Taiwan
Bilenky Aermet tandem 2018 USA
Firefly #275 2019 USA
Casati Monza 2020 Italy

5 USA
2 England
2 Taiwan
1 Japan
1 Italy

Components are 'nuther whole story. Who has a bike with components from the most countries?

There was a time I just had bikes from the pacific northwest.

Now I got 2 USA bikes and 2 Taiwan bikes (I am assuming my trek fatbike is made in taiwan. But if not its somewhere in Asia)

Roadbikes are nearly all American-made coupled with Italian-made parts.
Mountainbikes are nearly all American-made with components from all over.

Keepin' it local! Nice. Presumably the IF is before they moved to the Live Free or Die state...

I play this game another way. For any individual bike, how many countries have contributed parts for that bike?

Memory says my biggest number is 9, kinda like this:

France - Mavic rims
Germany - Conti tires
England - Brooks saddles
US - Chris King headset
Switzerland - DT spokes
Italy - Campy shifters
Japan - Shimano stuff/derailleurs, brakes, etc
Canada - Race Face chainrings
Taiwan - Q-Tubes tubes

In most cases for me, this kind of mix is on a US-built frame.

I'm a little bit international with my bikes, but some changes coming, I think

2 from the USA: No22 and K.Bedford (I like ex-Serotta NY builders )
1 from Italy: Fabrica Strada SL
2 from Taiwan: Trek Boone and Trek Emonda ALR

Also have another USA frameset (also No22) that I'm trying to decide if it should follow the Emonda ALR out the door, along with the Boone to fund a USA made gravel bike.

I have 3 bikes made in Canada (Brodie / Dekerf / Altruiste) and 2 in the US (Moots /Speedvagen)

Of all my bikes I think my brodie likely has the most countries(8) represented on it in terms of parts:

Canada - frame/fork / stem / seatpost
USA - brakes (Grafton) /BB (cook bros ti) /skewers (ringle) /headset (King)
Taiwan - I assume - titec / bontrager ti handlebar
France - Mavic Dakar front hub/ Mavic rims
Italy - Bontrager Saddle
Japan - rear hub/derailleurs/shifters/brake levers /ritchey crank
Germany - tires - Continentals
Tubes - Thailand - no name

And I thought I was the only one who sits around thinking these things

I have a Bob Jackson frame that I am building up,
Zeus components from Spain
Weinman rims from Switzerland
T/A crankset from France
Top it off with a Brooks B-12 saddle

Right now I have the Zeus front and rear derailleur plus shift levers
I have an old T/A crankset from France

I pretty much have everything I need plus tools, so it's a matter of time before I start this project

Due to the global economy, very few bikes come from a single country. That's especially true for bikes in the USA. About the closest one can come to an "American" bike should best be described as "Assembled in America from imported parts" (and that includes most so-called "American" frames a well).

My most "American" bike was welded in Iowa from True Temper tubes (made in a US factory). It includes a a number of US sourced components, incuding Chris King Headset and Phill Wood BB. But when taken by mass, this bike is less than 1/3rd sourced from the US.

I frequently hear that we should support our local LBS's, because it keeps money in the local economy. But that strikes me as a hollow claim. Bike shops have long stopped sourcing their wares locally, or even from the US. How much of a typical shop's inventory actually comes from the US? If the bike shop won't buy local, why should their customers?

Nice. I had that for a while...Fat Chance, Merlin ExtraLight, and the Hot tubes. All within Route 495.

Now my bikes are all Italian (and all the Italians were made in Italy) or American.

Most of the components are Italian (or American - Phil Wood, Chris King), except for the mountain bikes, which are Japanese.

These threads always sound a bit like actresses, etc trying to one-up each other in the "exotic" department:
"Yes, thank you for asking. I'm actually half Irish, half German, half Cherokee, two quarters Argentine, a quarter Dutch-Antilles, with some Basque and Nepalese and a bit of Somali (on my grandma's side) thrown in...."

The chilean bike. The builder is a guy called Samuel Del Valle, his family built bikes since probably 1930's. Builder did just racing bikes with aggressive geometry, that was his stuff. Master Samuel died like 3 years ago, the diabetes killed him, he was short and light... diabetes non controllable at all so he died from it. I could continue talking about the builder but better stop here :P Tiny old man was a master of the torch and with him saw the weirdest solutions to problems with cracks, dents and stuff. Things nobody would bother to touch here, he was going to fix them. Learn a lot from him about what to look in frames and stuff, BTW he built w/o a jig, even lugless w/o jig and the smallest track and road bike ive seen from him was a 47 cm frame he made for a junior rider. But he had an old italian made table tho. He passed the art to his sons but since frame building is dead doe to chinese imports pretty much all the custom stuff is gone since like 20 years ago. Talked with one of his old students (Master Cavalin) and he hasnt touched the torch since like 2002.

As for my frame in particular, columbus SL...with the far superior italian BB shell. He did not like english BB TBH, but if u asked for bsa he was going to put BSA. Aggressive stuff like Davidson. Funny thing, there's no serial numbers to identify his frames but just for a couple of details here and there. Now that the dude is gone, his frames are hot over there in chile. He made me 5 frames, I know where my last 2 track frames are, and actually my fav track one was a straight gauge mannesman tubing 0.9 or 1mm... heavy tubes, nothing fancy, tad heavy but was a beast to ride in the track.

Great Question. I'm sure my answer will need editing if I go looking around. I'm not going to attempt to list every bike and country, only ones that add another country. I will say that USA made frames outnumber those from every other country, probably upwards of 40 frames made in USA.

1987 Cannondale R600, my first road bike, USA
late 70s Bob Jackson 531 road frame with Weigle mods, UK
1989 Basso Loto, Italy
Merckx MXL, Belgium
Nishiki Ultimate, Japan
Cannondale CAAD8 CX, Taiwan
Rocky Mountain, bunch of them, Canada
steel Look - can't remember the model number, France?
Titan - Swiss company but frames may have been made in Italy
I have a carbon Diamondback frame that may have been made in China. Probably a cheapo single speed that will qualify China if not the DB.

Guessing the rank in numbers by country would be:

USA
Italy
Taiwan
Canada
UK
Belgium
Japan
Switzerland (If Titan qualifies)
China
France

Benotto set up a factory in Mexico to import to the US. Joints were routinely overheated during brazing, resulting in many frame failures. Italian Benottos are awesome.

By the founder of Paceline Forum sponsor Wittson, Vitas Zukauskas (https://wittson.com/custom-titanium-frame-builder), no less, so the pedigree is excellent.

I have always wanted to ride a CT-1 or -2. Which model did you have?

Vanilla - United States, Oregon. Steel tubes from unknown locations around the globe, but the bike was definitely fillet brazed in Portland, OR unless Sacha had a secret lab in China, Taiwan, the North Pole, etc.

Current group is Japanese designed, made in Malaysia. Previous group was Italian, and I'm pretty sure made in Italy (this was Chorus 10s, and I think everything all the way down to Veloce was made in Italy in this era). Hubs are US, spokes are Sapim (so nominally Belgian, but not sure if made in Belgium), rims are Boyd but likely produced in Taiwan.

Parlee gravel - company based in US, Massachusetts. This frame is definitely made in China, and I have no issues with this. Group is a similar story to the Vanilla. Wheelset has French hubs (Aivee), Sapim spokes, definitely mainland Chinese rims (likely Light Bicycle).

Gunnar Crosshairs - US, Wisconsin. Group is Ultegra, so same story as the other two bikes, but the crank is a TA Carmina. Pretty sure this is made in France. Wheels are CK hubs, so US, but Taiwanese rims.

I think it's more interesting to think about the origin of all the parts and components of a single bike. Here's my "beater" commuter/roadie built from flotsam and jetsam accumulated over 30 years. I imagine the "real" inventory of country origins for a single modern bike would include at least as many countries.

Frame/fork: Czchekoslovakia (pinned and hearth-brazed Favorit)
Brakes: maybe Czech, maybe former East Germany? "Centra" centerpulls
Brake levers: Czech(Favorit)
Shifters: Italy (Campy downtube)
Cables/housing: recent generic, probably Taiwan, maybe China?
Derailleurs: Japan (yay, Suntour Cyclone!)
Crankset/BB: Italy (Avocet, made by Ofmega)
Pedals: Japan (Shimano 600)
Toe clips/straps: Italy (Christophe)
Seatpost: Japan (SR Laprade)
Saddle: France (Favorit logo Ideale 90)
Rims: France (Mavic)
Spokes: Switzerland (old DT)
Tires: Thailand (newer Vittoria tubs)
Hubs: Italy (Campy threaded 6 speed)
Freewheel: Japan (Suntour 14-28 six speed)
Handlebar: Italy (Cinelli Mod 64)
Stem: Italy (Cinelli 1a)
Headset: France (Stronglight)
Bottle cage: USA (King Kage baby!)
Frame pump: France (Zefal)

I bought the frame/fork used with a few parts and built up as my first road bike back in the mid-70s, the frame was likely built in 1973 and carried to Canada from behind the Iron Curtain for the Montreal Olympics, then later sold off to a local shop to support travel costs for the team. You can feel the pins inside the tube junctions used to hold the lugs in place during the brazing process, done between bricks on a hearth rather than using a torch.
