View Full Version : Brake fade on carbon rims

Brake fade happens when the rim (more precisely, brake track) overheats. After riding a few carbon wheels, I notice the braking on some rims fades faster than on others (same longish descent and same pads). They feel roughly the same temperature by touch after descent and none feels too hot to touch, which makes me think the treatment/design of brake track matters more. Some manufacturers claim their rims can stand up >200 celsius, but that's kinda irrelevant if braking goes way before the rim blows up.

So, any anecdotal or proven recommendation on which rims resist brake fade than others? Another thing is, how much difference does tubular makes here?

My experience has been that actuating/releasing rim brakes on carbon wheels consistently provides far better performance than simply dragging them down a long mountainous descent. Campagnolo wheels, Campagnolo brakes. Campagnolo pads. YMMV.
