It's amazing to think what it must have been to ride the Giro a century ago. The Bottecchia story makes note of a stage from Naples (on the Mediterranean coast) to Chieti (to the northeast, on the Adriatic coast). That is 280 km's in a single day... more than 3 hours by car on the high-speed A1/A25 Autostrada. Can't imagine riding that on a primitive bike, basically without gearing - on crude roads - there were none of the tunnels or viaducts built subsequently.

Thanks for sharing - riding those heavy bikes, with that equipment and no support - those riders were beasts. Wonder how they would fair in todays modern game? I think they would kick a$$ and take no prisoners.
