I recall seeing some good looking stealthy lights. what is out there.

my carbon bike has what i consider nice clean lines to it, i need a light out back but i would rather not muck it up with seatpost or seat stay mounting on this frame.

I haven't ridden with with it yet - it's for a build that is not complete.

But a low cost experiment...$17 (3-4 weeks to arrive)

What saddle are you using?

I have a Specialized Power saddle and my neighbor 3D printed some Varia mounts for me that attaches to the SWAT bolts on the underside of Specialized saddles. It looks pretty clean and it's solid. I have a few extra I'd let go for cheap, PM me.

There are some other 3D mounts available for the Varia on Shapeways too: https://www.shapeways.com/marketplace?tag=varia

Exposure does a saddle rail mount for their trace-r range of rear lights.

I made a thread a while back with pics but you can get an under the saddle mount for the exposure traceR. It’s a nice light besides the charging port thing which is manageable but not ideal, you can pull it out of the bracket without removing the rubber strap.

You are probably thinking battery, but the cleanest has to be with a wired Supernova E3 attached horizontally to underside of saddle, with wire run internally through the seatpost. Cant find pictures but recall seeing somewhere. Those things are tiny, with just three super bright leds

Is that supposed to be more unobtrusive/clean than just using the provided varia mount on the seatpost?

This is what I use on my "go fast" bikes. I have two of them.
I like the fact that you can pivot it down 90 degrees so it runs ~ parallel to the seat post.
The mount itself is very discreet.

I feel that it is.

Also this mounts higher than it would on my seatpost, and it's more secure than the rubber band mount that Garmin provides.

Fizik saddle 3d printed and bontrager Flare RT here, works great across all Fizik saddles and all generations of Bontrager Flare's and Ions actually.

Shapeways has a ton of options for both rear and front light integration. However, the Flare RT does come with a really nice rubber mount for the seatpost that wouldn't mark up what you have.

then hang it from there. then it only messes up the lines of your head. and if you have more than one bike you only need one light cuz you prob wear the same helmet all the time. works for me.

I’ve been using a kit from L&M that grabs onto the seat rails. I like that it fits between the seat and my saddle bag. (Sorry about it being upside down, but the point of the image remains. How the heck can I flip it? It’s correct of my computer.)

I've got a couple of mounts from here that I use with the Garmin radar and a Fizik saddle, they work really well. I think they do some other stuff also besides the Fizik mounts.

I've also had the the Lupine saddle rail system and liked it but prefer the radar.

isn't the point of a rear red light to be seen from as wide an angle as possible?

I do like the sleek look of tucked under the saddle but the line of sight is really narrow. For night riding I just hook a flasher on the seatpost or seatstay as low as possible. It's night time and no one can see the aesthetic lines of the bike. Daytime riding, if they can't see me with my white helmet and bright colors they won't see a flasher and I'm toast anyway.

You can’t see the light square on from the sides but you can see it from a wide angle from the rear. The traceR is extremely bright and quite visible as a tail light imo. It also has cool features like dimming if another bike headlight is right behind you, changing based on ambient light conditions, or acting like a brake light with its force sensor (not sure how useful the brake light really is tho). My other tail light is a bontrager flare R which I like but it kinda sits there like a wart on the seat post and it bothers me when my fat thighs tough it.

Pictures of this light:

https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/...12108580824047 - $17.

This light has a motion sensor, so it turns itself off if the bike is still for awhile.

Has multiple modes. Attaches to seat rails.

I've noticed that with my own pix a lot recently. I suspect some common image handling library acquired a bug. I saw a comment on another forum about whatever is doing the display having trouble properly interpreting some attribute(s) in the JFIF header (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_File_Interchange_Format). One way to correct things might be to convert to PNG. The file will be significantly larger (your image grows by about a factor of 4), but shouldn't suffer from that bug.

sometimes the simple solution is the best one. picked up an exposure trace(r) and am using a simple zip tie to the saddle rail. man, this light is super bright and powerful and the position under the saddle is perfect.

I have high hopes for integrating a light in these tapped holes in the post clamp, but have not investigated it until now...

thirdgenbird
06-26-2020, 12:47 PM
That is a great idea. Why don’t more posts have those holes?

You could probably buy one of those universal stem mounts for a Garmin and mount a varia right to it with little to no modification.

This Bontrager cube-like thingy attaches easily to the helmet, seatpost, seat tube, etc. and burns long and bright.

@RWL2222 and @thirdgenbird...I have similarly also wondered why more saddle/seatpost/stem/handlebar/lighting companies have not partnered together to offer sleek and comprehensive solutions.

So many of these options look amazing, but since I ride with a tool roll they won't work for me.

I ride with a clip on light on my back pocket for all of my early morning / evening rides.

I actually have room on my seat post to mount my light, but I rigged this up as a proof of concept with cheap Go Pro mounts and a Garmin quarter turn since the saddle has an optional accessory mount. I may refine it a bit, but as is now I have room for an even larger tool roll. The one I was using previously was just under 7" long and overstuffed and still fit fine.

I just did something very similar with my Pro Stealth saddle. Got them to customize this so that I could have my Arundel Dual saddle bag and then the Varia behind it.

Turned out very well...:)
