Would you trust this front tire to descend a 1200 foot hill with sweeping turns and speeds over 40 mph?

I wouldn't trust that tire to do 20mph.

Replace it, $35-70 is not worth an ambulance trip

Tires are cheap. Get a new one is my vote and I’m cheap.

Negative. Cracking like that, the tire is done.

I posed a similar question to myself two weeks ago with a tire not too dissimilar from your picture. I opted to go for a ride on it anyway. 6mi later - BOOM! Blew out the tire. I was lucky that it was not catastrophic and I didn't crash, but I went home and ordered two new tires immediately.

Life is too short to ride dangerous tires!

No, it is not safe. Replace it.

Yikes! I've never seen a crack that long on a tire.

Those tires are literally cheaper than an inner tube, if you like White:

I don't think I've ever seen a tire cracked like that.

I bought a bunch of these from my bike club years ago. They have multiple compounds and start separating from each other. The manufacture acknowledged they had a bad batch and sent me new ones. The new ones do the same thing. I will never use Verdistien tires again.

Sure, use them. Just don't damage the bike, which will be happily be inherited. Hope frame is a size medium. Will pm shipping details.. 😊 Joking.

Yep, toss those crackers, before you get tossed.

i too used to really like vredesteins. Used them a lot in the early 2000's. The whole "tri-comp" was their claim to fame, and i thought the tires did ride and grip very nicely, but ultimately - just like you, my tires would always suffer cracks before i could wear them out, but i never saw anything this bad.

i'm done with vredesteins also, but admittedly have not tried them again for well over a decade.

As Angry noted it has the Tri Comp Tech so you're probably good to go.

Y'know, I guess I get the "Is This Safe To Ride On?" questions about frames or forks or wheels...

But expendibles?!?! Tires are supposed to wear out. We're supposed to replace them regularly...and well before they're too dangerous to ride on.

There was no reason to ride those tires even when they were new.

High-quality tires and tubes are the cheapest improvement in ride quality you can make on a bike, the cheapest speed increase, and the cheapest weight savings. I see them as the first performance upgrade after properly lubing a chain.

Buy some Vittoria Corsa G tires and latex tubes and smile when you ride.

I would think that the center channel will help improve traction in the wet—ideally you should use the tire for wet-weather rides.

wonder how bad a tire would have to appear for the OP to know 'for sure' it's toast...

Not worth the risk. Toss it or use it for the trainer only.

Relax guys. I replaced the tire. I don't think it is safe and that is why I replaced it. I have not used this wheel and tire in 10 months. It did not look like this 10 months ago. The Vredestein tires tread comes apart by time not by miles once you mount it. The only reason I bought the Vredestien tires is because my club purchased them and recommended them. They grip well when when desending the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California (when they are not cracked).

Yes I am the guy looking for expensive wheels. I probably have spent more money on tires during my life time than most of you guys. I was riding Clement Del Mondo silk tubulars on a Schwinn Paramount back in 1973. No need to knock me for being cheap. And yes I have a collection of Veloflex clinchers and tubulars in my home and latex tubes.

We're all good here, so don't rise to the bait. Just the stir-crazy kicking in. Have a banana
