I was just doing my let's see search for a bike I've been looking for EVER.

Figured I'd ask what others are looking for. What bike eludes you?

For me it's a LeMond Billato in 52/53cm

Pegoretti Custom Team 57ish top tube.

I’ve got a box of parts to build it. I’m only short a seatpost, handlebars, and bar tape. (But know what I want)

For me, the big ones are a 3Rensho road or 1990s or earlier Eddy Merckx in about 48-50cm sizing. There are a few others that really interest me too, such as Serotta.

Pinarello Telekom - either a Prince or Dogma in a 60cm+

Been looking for 12yrs and have only ever seen one for sale, but it was cheaper Aelle tubing. I know they exist, but have never actually seen a Prince/Dogma for sale in this size.

In no particular order and just one or two because I seldom think about such questions:

1. Concorde Gavina Columbus SL in PDM team colours
2. Legnano in 1988 Alfa-Lum team colours
3. Raleigh Team Pro SBDU 531/753 in TI Raleigh team colours
4. Gazelle Champion Mondial AA Special with butterfly seat and chain stay bridges for no real reason
5. Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra SLX in Hitachi team colours

Special mentions:

Moser Leader AX in a colour scheme other than green or pink
Ron Cooper because "you felt like you were on something special riding a Ron Cooper". Could be true.

I want the BMC Phonak bike(s) the early ones in team livery or even the Swiss glad look. I had one once and loved it,

The only thing I want new(er) is a 29er full suspension that does well on gravel and ride roads as well as it does on challenging terrain. 4 to 5 inches of travel, while still be able to pedal efficiently on the flat fire roads.

If anyone has any good suggestions I am all ears,

Found it, sort of.
Always wanted a Pogliaghi track bike (even though I don't ride track and wouldn't ride a fixie without at least a front brake, and wouldn't drill a vintage track fork, sacrilege).

In late 2010 a Nagasawa fixed gear road trainer (designed with brakes) showed up for sale here, and in my size. At the beginning of his career, Yoshiaki Nagasawa apprenticed to Sante Pogliaghi (and then to De Rosa). So this bike fulfills that want!

I can't think of any other specific bike I've looked for. The Casati I recently acquired scratches a long itch for Italian classic steel, but I wasn't looking for a Casati Monza. Now that I have it and have learned a bit about Casati (100 year old company) I'm happy to have a marque that's a bit more obscure than the usual suspects :)

I've been on the hunt off and on for a while:

Aquila/SLX PDM Concorde to replace the one I sold in a fit of needing rent $$

89 Paramount Borrowed a friend's when the Concorde was at Hot Tubes getting the munched dropout replaced. Fit/rode even better than the Concorde

?88? Master Olympic in the blue décor like a couple teammates had in college.

I wouldn't say no to a Mapei C40, but I don't have lust for one

Ditto with an EL-OS Scapin that we used to sell at PBS 'back when.' Didn't know enough to buy one then...

-A C40 or C50 in WC colors

I'm not actively "looking for" any of these, but in the spirit of quarantined How Can I Entertain Myself Today? I'll say that if I stumbled across any of these in my size and Very Good condition I would seriously consider blowing some discretionary income:

- a Hampsten Strada Bianca from when Kent Eriksen was welding them
- a 2010 BMC SLC01 Pro Machine
- a 2012 Ridley Noah MMXII FB
- a Jeff Jones Ti Spaceframe w/ Truss Fork & H-Bars
- a ~1970 Schwinn Stingray Krate

So, do you ride it?

I'll admit, there is something so appealing to me about a classic steel track bike: It's so pure, unadulterated...just a handful of metal tubes and, what, four moving parts total? (Okay, six with pedals.) It's like the platonic ideal of a bicycle. Or a stick figure drawn from memory. I love that simplicity!

But I would never ride it on the street w/o a brake...and the brake starts to disrupt that unadulterated purity. And my local track isn't local enough for me to even consider that.

So I'll probably never own one.

For me... That was a Kirk Frameworks JKS-X. Incredible bike. I can't imagine a steel bike that rides better or fits better. I still wouldn't say no to a Pegoretti, though, if the right one came along - either a Luigino with a twin plate crown, or a Day Is Done.

Others have already mentioned them, but:

1. A Jones spaceframe. I regret not buying one when he was first making them himself, but it would probably have blown the budget. One came up for sale used at a good price a few years back, I hesitated because it was too small but I should have just brought it.

2. A Serotta Hors Categorie. I had one for a very brief time and regret selling it, just because it’s such a unique approach to bike design. It would probably be more logical to get a Kirk Terraplane, but who needs logic...

3. A Time VXRS Ulteam in XL. Still would be too short, but it’s an itch I want to scratch. I’ve seen a few for sale in the US and even in Europe, but it’s been uneconomical to get them to the UK partly because of the size of the package with the ISP. R&A Cycles have a NOS Bettini edition, but they’re still asking $4k which feels excessive.

The Nagasawa is a 1988 road trainer - built for a Keirin racer to train on the road, so it's made to have brakes. I definitely ride it, but not nearly so much as the geared bikes or MTB. I have five rides on it so far in 2020, longest is 30 miles. Set up currently with the single speed side operative - trying to minimize my chances for any mishap during COVID, and riding fixed only occasionally increases that risk.

In Search of -
Serotta Legend HC with 1.125" headtube
60th Anniversary Schwinn Paramount Ti in Gold (aka SerottaMount)

Had, sold and want back -
Yeti Road Project (turquoise with 1.125" headtube)
Pegoretti Marcelo touched by Dario (had one twice. Life got in the way)
Serotta CSi (again twice. See above)
Eddy Merckx Paris-Roubaix Motorola racer built for Frankie Andreau
GT National Team (1998) road frame

The overlapping college years of our four kids made some of the above decisions necessary, and I don't regret that. Besides, hunting is half the fun (okay, that's a lie, but it helps).

I have everything I want in two bikes, but I would love an upgrade in my touring bike and my winter commuter.

Winter Commuter:
I've been looking for a late model Litespeed Blue Ridge in a size 53. I have owned them in both a 51 and 55, but the elusive size 53 with a 55cm top tube still eludes me.
They are a nice spec and usually at a nice price point for mid-western winter commuter duty that won't rust out.

Touring:
I'd love an earlier model Co-Motion Pangea - again with around a 55cm ETT. I have 90% of it in my Soma Saga, but the extra stoutness in the tubing would be pleasant for longer treks. The current models have an odd chainstay design that I don't care for.

Most of my wants are modern and accessible, except for my menial budget. My Grail bike thread is a testament to my patience and lack of forward planning. I started that four years ago and if I had set aside $3k per year, I would have a Crumpton.

Dreams that I have now are for a Kirk or Potts disc bike - all I need to do is plunk down a deposit and wait my turn.

There are so many lustworthy bikes now that its hard to quantify ONE bike that I want, knowing that my luxury bike buying days are largely a thing of the past. (young kids, travel dreams, mortgage, modest income, etc). NBD.

That said, if you have a Kirk, Potts or Crumpton in 58cm laying around, chime in, brothers and sisters

can't blame em. i have a couple and the check is by far the longest i've held onto any bike ever. millions of feet and thousands of miles touring, still love the looks i get dropping people with a hunk of dented gas pipe

Mostly I'm finding beat to hell complete builds from like 2009 listed for 700 dollars and I don't want any of those parts. I should just get a new one from Universal.

Feel like I'm polluting this thread talking about surlys lol.

There's a white Oschner frame for cheap on the San Diego craigslist that might be your size; 62x58. Cheap enough that you could repaint it...

I remember drooling at a whole lineup of these pink bikes at the 2003 road worlds in Hamilton, Ontario. So drool worthy.
If I could find a dogma magnesium in my size, I'd be very tempted to ship it off to Alan Wanta for a respray in the Telekom pink finish.

Actually, it was also at that race where I got my first closeup look at a Phonak SLT01 bike, such a cool frame with that skeleton seat tube lug cluster thingy.

Here is Bobby Julich's telekom bike from that race, guess they were Prince LS's.

you can't go wrong with a modern era caad.

I'm not actively "looking for" any of these, but in the spirit of quarantined How Can I Entertain Myself Today? I'll say that if I stumbled across any of these in my size and Very Good condition I would seriously consider blowing some discretionary income:

I rode a CAAD10 for a couple years. It was more twitchy than my 80s steel bikes, but I loved it. Felt planted, super light, and stable - just very quick to respond to input - as you would expect.

I had a caad 9 and it was okay, and a caad 10 I hated. The caad 9/11 is a caad 5, which had a reputation as a particularly harsh ride.

Too big to actually ride a Stingray Krate for very far

Actually, that's a good question: My two off-the-shelf bikes are a 58 and a 56; my two custom bikes have top tube lengths somewhere in between those lengths. But I also am incredibly accommodating ...almost to a fault. I could probably ride anything from a 55 to a 60, but I would probably be foolish not to limit myself to stuff that's 57 +/- 1cm

Well, probably close but no cigar. I've got an original BMC SLC-01 (Pro Machine) with Chorus 11 and HED Ardennes wheels. But it is a BMC size 53, which by all accounts rides as a 55. I ride a ~55-56 on my others, but I probably wouldn't try to push the BMC up beyond 55, however. It's been relegated to the trainer lately. GL.

Since breaking my back, I'm always looking for road bikes that actually fit me now. 60x54 seems to be the magic combination (+/- 1 cm or so). I've only seen five in 15 years; bought the first, had the second one built for me, passed on the third, hoping shelter-in-place ends soon so I can test ride the fourth, and the fifth is on ebay but located in Thailand and feels risky to me. Dream bike would be a classic steel randonneur with that geometry and known provenance.

Probably a weird one in this group, but given that I've passed on the Pronto I thought I wanted for having two No22's the bike I wish I'd grabbed was the RSL version of the last rim brake Trek Domane in a 54. Could likely make the fit work with a 100mm stem, and it's just the perfect "bad pavement racer" for some of our races here in NJ, while having fenders for winter training with some nice fat 28mm tires on aluminum rims

This is the least-loved bike in my stable, and I'm not quite sure why. At one point I consigned it to trainer rat status, then reversed it and treated it to a set of TRP Vbrakes and an Alpha Q fork (replacing a Winwood built from carbon impregnated stone or something) . I have to finish up the brake cabling and then I'll go do some gravel with it. I think it will surprise me. :)

I've mostly stopped looking, because I've found bikes, sat on them for literally years, and never built them or rode them

Dave Tesch 101
Team 753 Raleigh
Merlin MTB (I *would* like that one back!)

Raleigh Pro MkIV (way too big, bought to flip)
Cinelli Supercorsa (slightly too big)

and two that are still in extended build stage and maybe will stay with me for a while
Colnago Prestige
Colnago Master Olympic

I agree with this completely. I actually got a quote for Dave Wages to build me a fork, but this is not justifiable without the appropriately sized frameset (the seller mis-measured the second one).

The frame is also rather unforgiving with the large pear-shaped downtube, but I like that I can use it as a true touring bike for some versatility.

For me:

97’ or 98’ Ibis Spanky in a smaller size.

Color would be the pistachio green but I’m not that picky. Definitey want one with the original fork - I see larger Spankys on eBay sometimes but they all have after market forks.

mine are all the one's that got away:

Notable was a Merckx mxl in Caloi livery....shoulda jumped on that one.

Next was a Colnago c-50 in custom Wanta Saronni paint....

There's a gorgeous Ciocc Tandem out there that the owner has no intention of selling.

And then I just nearly bought but missed an Anniversary Richard Sachs.

Serotta Hors Categorie in 53cm with a 1 1/8" HT

I see we have similar tastes.

I am still looking for a Hors Categorie +/-55cm (I can make 54 or 56 work, or would have the frame cut and adjusted...) with WIDE clearances - A cross bike...

Also looking for the stiff elastomers. All I have are medium.

:)

I still love this design and the ride it offers - looks be damned.

Always wanted a Peg -

Firefly would be nice...

I will get a Kirk one day -

For the most part, I am really happy with my older Serotta's. I just wish they had wider clearances.

:)

It would be cool to have a bike from each 'era' that was actually used in one of the great tours... Domestique bikes would be fine :)

For me the bike that jumped when I read the title was the Serotta Slicker. I remember when it came out and got a chance to play with one many years ago when I was visiting the factory.

If I ever see one in my size and it's not silly priced I'd be hard pressed NOT to buy it.

I could use a 57 and a 56 would do too. Did see one once on the bay and, well, I'd rather not discuss it any further. If found, please send a PM. :)

Oh, from an earlier post in this thread, I have that 57 Eddy Merckx in 7-11 colors. It has chromed fork and seat stays w/nary a scratch on it. I might consider a trade if that Serotta could be found!

Most of these can be had if you're able and willing to spend enough, though I've seen a few used Festkas around. A Ghibli or Della Santa in your size is more likely to come up in your size than in mine. Those are two I'd love to have but don't really look for since I try to keep expectations somewhat realistic at times.

@Jeff N. Like an *actual* 63mm or a BG XL, which was likely called a 56 or 58? I have a 56 and I believe it was the second largest made. I’m 6’2” with long legs and ape arms, but still felt stretched out enough on my BLT frame to warrant a short dirt drop stem install recently.

In any case, a 63mm frame using Bruce Gordon sizing means you’re essentially Shaq, I think.

Tried to get a 62 cm SLR Trek Emonda.....next summer. No way. Would be nice to have the Domane RSL in 62 cm but I think 58 cm is the biggest they make......the standard version has way too much stack and not enough reach. I need about 405mm reach with that STA and about 600-610 stack.

I have no idea what to buy or what is remotely available. Used to be able to buy a stock frame pretty quickly especially in the Fall.

I was looking at the Dogma F. The guy at the big shop in Brooklyn says I could fit onto a 57.5. Had a $400 fit recently, told I needed more like 415 reach and 610mm stack with 73 degree STA. 75 inches tall on a bad day and 1.05 Ape index and 36 inch inseam. The reach is good on the Dogma but too much stack.

Generally, the ones that got away! In the olden days ('04-'08) for me, I bought and sold 50 bikes/frames. Regretted letting go of about 20-25% of them. Mostly, because some of them just never got a fair shake. I was trying to maintain a 'fleet' for myself, but the parts bucket was never good enough.

I take a peek on fleabay every once in a while just in case any of them show back up.

50cm Colnago C-40, Mk 1 or 2, Mapei or Rabobank paint. The absolute unicorn would be one in Panaria paint, as I know the CEO of the company.

I've come close over the years, including one in Rabobank paint last month on EBay, but to no avail.

The fire still burns, but with a Bishop and Colnago Dream just not as fiercely.

As long as we are sharing success stories, I'll add this. I bought this about 18 months ago and it's exactly what I had dreamed about (bad pun, as I have Dream Plus as well). I also changed the crankset to a carbon square taper Record compact. But while the chassis is fantastic, the powerplant still needs a lot of tuning and needs to lose a lot of weight.

What frame geometry works for you?

For a Seven ti-carbon? Big, but not too big. TT 56-58cm, ST to top 56-59cm, HT 190-205mm, angles 73.0 or less.

Thanks for asking.

This one. Perfect in every way. ( I would swap out the Campy shift levers for retrofrictions…)

When we were in Paris last Fall, I purposely avoided going to the AS shop for fear that I’d come back with a bike like that.

This looks fantastic. The other photographs that I've seen make the paint look much more gray.

Please post some completed build pictures!
