Qualifying for Monaco in ‘90.

Speechless.

You think you are tough and or talented? I’m not even talented enough to embed the video.

I a huge fan.

Funny story. My wife was wearing a Senna S shirt to a restaurant. A younger very good looking man who worked there approached us. He asked if we liked Sena and started telling us how he grew up with Senna in his life. He was Brazilian. Told us all the church bells would ring and the whole city he lived in would go nuts if he won a race. Told us about a song that would play. On his break he went and got his iPod to share the sing with us. My wife became a bigger fan that day because of a 25 year old tan kid who does jiu jitsu.

You sure it wasn't capoeira?

But for real he was brilliance in the flesh. Every once in a while I go back to view his "Lap of the Gods" and always marvel at the move to go from 4th to 3rd, the sheer audacity, the impossibility of the speed in and out of the corners and just how absurdly wet the track was when he made the move.

Can you imagine how exhilarating/frightening it would feel like as a passenger racing around that circuit?

It would probably be terrifying, based on how close the walls are, and the lack of a passenger seat.:p

Senna was as spectacular to watch as Gilles Villeneuve but not as crazy :) talent-wise Stefan Bellof could have challenged him but sadly never got a chance in a car he could really compete.
He more than once gave Senna a good race in his grossly inadequate Tyrrell, for example in that iconic rainy Monaco race. The stewards saved Prost from being caught by the spectacular Senna, but Bellof was third and closing the gap to both, on 150hp less...

not to me. Senna will always be number 1.

And if we go by titles then Schumacher probably but to me its more than just titles, Fangio was very good too but my dad and I used to watch F1 back in the Senna days. My dad was a huge Senna fan and I have great memories of watching him with my dad. When Senna died, my dad stoped watching F1.

It seems like Lewis Hamilton is the GOAT at this point, especially as he keeps winning when most drivers would retire. And the $$ and talent pool is deeper than it's ever been. Schumacher was just so boring to watch. Senna was the most beautiful driver, such a shame how the the FIA kneecapped his car and basically caused his death. What would have been..

i remember watching the movie, it really moved me.

the greats have some extra-human ability to play the movie reel on slow motion in their heads when it's happening a super sonic speeds on the tarmac. it really is a pleasure to watch as he navigates the course at speed. brilliant racing.

Don't forget, Senna was doing this with 3 pedals. Imagine taking your hand off the wheel to shift at those speeds and the g-forces they experience.

These two clips of TdF descents are the closest I've seen at matching Senna's talent, flair and cajones on pedal powered wheels.

That's a pretty good video. Looking at that video now it is pretty amazing that Honda let him lap that thing at speed without at least a helmet. And the shoe shots are pretty great.

And my wife got confused with 2 pedals last week. Thankfully no real harm done other than to underbody plastic and wallet.

Might have helped relax the purchase ban enough for me to get a frame. :)

Such an artist at the wheel. IMO, Senna is unparalleled - despite how many titles other drivers may rack up, he will be the most entertaining to watch and the one that captured the imagination of a generation. The MJ of racing.

Senna will always be my favorite driver. I started following F1 in 1990 because I read about his rivalry with Prost and the first race I watch on TV (I paid for cable at my parents with my own money earned from my high school job) was the Suzuka race when they collided.

When he crashed at Imola I immediately knew that he wasn't going to make it and just cried in front of the TV.

Top Gear did a very good tribute segment on him on an anniversary of his death.

He's a natural.

As always, by the time your eyes see it, it's too late.

You need to be able to see it with your brain and your heart. you need both. The hands and the legs are just an extension.

There is a cool video of Lewis Hamilton trying out Senna's MacLaren F1.

Senna was such an amazing driven during F1's golden age. I was a big F1 fan then (actually more of a Prost fan being French and all). Glued to the TV in front of every GP. Today's F1 is so boring in comparison.

More elegantly than I could have said it. He and Fangio could pass while other f1 drivers said they were on the limit and were stunned to be passed.

True but hard to compare eras. Today there's so many electronics and driver aids to assist the drivers. Don't get me wrong, it still takes a ton of talent to take an F1 car to its limit. When Valentino Rossi was flirting with taking the Ferrari seat, I believe he said that F1 at that point was more of an "engineer's sport" than a driver's sport

interesting...just listened to a Dinner With Racers podcast (awesome show btw) with Dario Franchitti where he talked about how physical the CART cars of that same era were-he didn't have the arm strength intitially (coming out of DTM) to hold the car straight on the STRAIGHTAWAY when taking a hand off the wheel to shift.

Thank you for linking this - very interesting. I wonder if it was a feel thing - not a subjective styistic quirk but a proprioceptive technique. A driver of his immense ability perhaps feels that.

I'm also on the list for loss of interest in F1 after Senna.

Any thoughts on the 1990 race at Suzuka, where at Senna's request they changed the pole position to the cleaner line, but the FIA rejected the change?
