View Full Version : nice external dropper? or drill?

Further to my thread about acquiring a mint 2013 Tallboy LT carbon, my only hesitation is that it doesnt have stealth dropper post routing. I dont think its a deal breaker, but it leads me to wonder the best way to get a dropper on this bike (and yes, it requires a dropper post for my riding).

To my knowledge, Fox Transfer comes in external format. There are some KS Lev models with external routing. No to Reverbs under any circumstances. Any others to consider?

Alternatively, is there a mystery hole in this frame somewhere that could be used to route a dropper? I shudder to think of drilling a hole in this frame (I weigh 215lbs) but I know many would do it. Has anyone drilled a frame for this purpose and not felt like they've compromised the carbon (and ergo, their safety)?

Thanks for any feedback,

Darren

Take a look at the Fox Transfer dropper. They are super reliable.

I would concur but $800 is the cost for perfection.

I use Magura Vryon... little bit cheaper..and I think little bit lighter.

Affordable, great customer service, plus 3 year warranty. Plus they're sort of local to you?

Yes, wireless systems are great but too much money. I have used an internally routed Transfer post and it was very good and reliable.

Yes, good point. I have a One-Up that is in a box waiting to go one my old bike, but now that I am selling it, no need. I love these posts, but they dont do external.

I will look into PNW...

A friend of mine got one of these for his Honzo ST. It has been great, 2 years so far with zero issues.

They also sent a bonus Loam lever which is really nice

I've got a PNW dropper with a top routed cable. It was around $250 total. Works like a dropper should, never even think about it unless I bomb a steep descent and forget to drop the saddle.

PNW is your answer here. It's just going to work and work and work.

Fox Transfer will also do that, but $150 more.

Thanks Mike. It seems this is the option. I cant justify a $700 dropper whatsoever. These PNW ones sound as good as the OneUps.

+1 Lucky (unlucky?) to have a few brands of dropper between my bikes + the spouse. None are perfect but the Fox Transfer is definitely toward the top. This includes two with external routing. Like many droppers, is sensitive to clamp pressure but (knock wood) been reliable (3 years on one, 1 year on other). Save a few bucks and get the basic version (no Kashima).

One feature I really like about Fox is the cable attaches at clamp, not at rails, so cleaner cable routing (imho).

<edit> Pass on the Fox lever - Wolf Tooth or PNW much better.

RaceFace on the other hand - RUN AWAY!

Drill baby, drill

Drilled out an sworks epic a while back for a drooper and haven't broken it yet. External routing is worthy of some bullying, just looks bad

You might drop SC a line and see what they say. Some brands completely condone this and will tell you wear to drill. Others give the gloom and doom speak.
