Saw a noticeable increase of dead squirrels on the road during my ride today.

One possible explanation:

Some local businesses re-opened last few days. More cars on the road.

Squirrels let down their guard during lockdown.

Need behavioral re-training.

Or the virus jumped the human-squirrel barrier.

I've been noticing this as well this past week. Not just squirrels. I think mostly due to time of year. Traffic, while still low, has close to doubled this past week. I do think the critters got used to lower volume of rolling obstacles.

Spring is always bad news for the furry ones. The ones killed here are likely jumping in front of cars due to the terrible weather. Can't take it anymore.

Squirrel mortality rate is very likely similar from year-to-year.
Perhaps easier to notice as a cyclist now given the quieter roads.

A few weeks ago went to a local park that was "closed", saw a whole bunch of squirrels running all over the place and some even got pretty close to me and don't seem to be scared of my presence. On a normal day, that park would be exploded with people as it is very popular with the locals.

I think its mating season for squirrels in your area. They are careless while chasing tail.

Along with most people, it seems..'some' around this somewhat enlightened republic, believing another crackpot conspiracy, have been poisoning small mammals around here. Squirrels, bunnies, cats..really disgusting..thinking they may be 'carriers...more group insanity...

Wait 'til the hawks find out. There's a webcam (https://youtu.be/9zYwa-9a56k) on a Red Tail hawk nest and there's always a few dead squirrels and chipmunks in it

This is the one that I love. 5G cell towers give you Covid (https://www.businessinsider.com/77-phone-masts-fire-coronavirus-5g-conspiracy-theory-2020-5), so burn 'em down!

I doubt that they give you Covid, but they do emit 10-100 times the radiation of 4g and really only benefit military and oppressive government through things such as this.

I'm sure that a nice fitting tin foil hat will prevent this.

increased communication technologies do have a dark side, it is a conspiracy theory. privacy is important and it is getting harder and harder to get.

I wonder how many squirrels die per day

I wonder how many squirrels die per day

Far less than the combination of birds that fly into wind turbines and people that get cancer from said turbines.
