View Full Version : Paceline Forum Online Numbers Trending Upwards - Why?

Hi all - I hope all of your families and you are safe and healthy during these crazy times. And if you are cycling, you are riding alone or "social distancing".

I have noticed that the number of us on the Forum in all sections is way up over the past weeks. So I must ask the question, why have the numbers gone up?

Why are you on more frequently and longer? For me, overhauling a few bike drivetrains and looking for compatible parts. And General Discussion is more robust than normal.

So what is your reason? Humor and creativity will be rewarded.

Chris

Sometimes the numbers go up, sometimes they go down.

You know...it's just cyclical. :)

The numbers are increasing for the same reason a penguin will march thousands of kilometers inland to his certain death than to the sea which is the focus of his life: wild, irrational madness.

Whether it is the madness of a cycling hobby obsessive or a current desperate, flailing need for personal connection -- no matter how tenuous -- during a global plague, the root remains the same.

Thank you for posting this question!!

I realize that I was mindlessly tracking the trends of the number of people online at different times of the day, different days of the week, min/max, etc.

I know the LBS are busy as can be now fixing up shed bikes. That might explain the uptick. My own profile fits the idea of: more people at home now, with extra time, and thankfully, spring weather as a basis for being here on PL.

I also have been off the bike for a looooong time, and greatly appreciate being able to quickly get a huge amount of up-to-date knowledge from one place.

You think these numbers are increasing? Have you seen pornhub's user data recently? :)
None of it is surprising.

As for my increased paceline activity, with the additional time on my hands, I come here for project ideas.

Lots of bored people with lots of time.

On my ride yesterday I was a lot of bikes and many of them being ridden by folks with "out of style" kits. So aside from the obvious, I think a lot of people are dredging up an old hobby.

Because there is nothing better in this world than long term bikes and buddies.

Well, there is a coffee thread here, too. :)

It's always on in the background on these long (long) conference calls.
Like right now.

They even had a gif at the top of their page saying "flatten the curve with a subscription"

Used to divide my forum time equally between here and across-the-hall.
Now spending much more leisure time adding bicycle commentary here.

Wish I did, I'm too old to be current on data analytics, not smart enough either.

Prolly shouldn't be sharing your screen then, huh?

:)

BTW, here's another site that's worth surfing 12 hours a day - the SWFL Eagle Cam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chLqW7ILpOc)! You just never know what's going to happen next. I've been following them since the second chick hatched...

My guess is that people are bored and spending more time online.

As a quick aside, I have to hand it to wernerherzogsid. His/her posts are so...on brand. I even read them in Werner Herzog's voice. It's exactly how Werner Herzog would post on a cycling forum. Maybe it's him, maybe it's not. At first I thought it was a bot (I'm not convinced otherwise) but either way it's enjoyable.

The other day I got a sextortion email (https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cybercrime/2019/02/sextortion-bitcoin-scam-makes-unwelcome-return/) asking for bitcoin in exchange for NOT publishing a special video that was recorded while I allegedly watched a site such as that.

It's assumed we are all on line more.
