No, however that's f'in brilliant...I get it. Pretty pricey way to "get you there" however.
In reality you could run a relatively small gear on the road and still have plenty of OOOph offroad.
Rivendell has a bike "quickbeam" that may interest you as it is infact designed for road / offroad use and the rear dropouts are angled so you still have the brake pads aligned regardless of wheel position AND room for beefy tyres.
Two rings up front + an 18 and you are in business :) That gives somewhere between 50 - 60 gear inches which is just fine for road / trail.

Warning: Thread Drift
I followed the link to the White Industries page, and they have a variable bolt circle crank for the road. An interesting idea! The smallest ring they offer is 30t, so it wouldn't help with my dream gearing of 42/28, but cool nonetheless...

Sorry to continue the thread drift, but dauwhe, you can do a 29/42 with a 94 mm bcd crank. The TA Carmina can be built up with a 94 mm double spider and 29/42 rings. I know it isn't exactly your dream set, but you are withing a tooth.

From what I read on their website, if you do the double/double setup, *both* combos are freewheeled. You can't do one fixed/one free. I could be wrong, but that's what I got out of their website.

i have the fixed/free hub...
...i think the sprocket combo's match up the same
regardless of the hub...
i'll have to ask them that question to be sure
before i buy
or maybe look at the set up you suggest tt...
thanks!

Thanks! Perhaps I'll start hunting for the elusive 29t chainring (I'm prone to the logical error that if Peter White doesn't have it, it doesn't exist!)...

Do you want silver...

The only small problem is you can't run a big difference in sprucket sizes. I'm running a 17 on the fixed and an 18 on the free side. Anything larger and the chain ends up being way too tight.

spiderman,
Here's a link I found to purchase the double/double setup:
http://www.speedgoat.com/product.asp?part=125649&cat=110&brand=347
Looks like its a two cog freewheel in back. Check this out, too:

Also, I think some who have replied to your post are thinking about the eno flip-flop hub, not the eno double/double setup... or am I confused? What hub are you planning on using?

is the eno flip/flop hub...
...instead of running a 17 on the free side
i would go with a 19 paired with the smaller chainring in front.
i would keep my 16 in the rear and use the 38t front with that.
...turning the wheel around to make the switch.
a double fixed set up on the drive side sounds like a great idea, too
but i don't think the current hub design accomodates that arrangement.
turning the wheel around makes sense for riding off road with a freewheel
so there isn't a pedal strike problem given my limited skills.
the double fixed option would be a potential breakthrough
for handling steeper grades.

spiderman,
I'm with you now...
If you want, you can do the double/double combo on the free side of the hub, you just need the 'dos eno' freewheel in back with the white double crank up front:
http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1555
And then I guess you can do whatever cog you want on the fixed side, as long as the chain tension isn't an issue.
Sounds like a cool setup.

that they don't make the set-up they advise 16/19!
thanks for the link!

yesterday i was out on the fixie...
it's the ciii with o2 fork i bought on the forum last winter.
i have a front long reach caliper brake for emergency stopping
...like when the chain breaks or comes off...
yesterday while i was stopped for lunch
the front and back wheels 'froze'.
...must be time for a true cross frame or
maybe i should just stick to riding inside!?!
oh, yeah...
i'm 5'10" and 174# after my fill of swedish pancakes.
