Searched the threads and haven't come across the answer to my exact questions.

Situation: I have bikes equipped with both Record 10 and Record 11 speed 53x39 cranks and 12/13x29 cassettes, both with standard Chorus F/D setups. One 10spd bike has Ultra Drive EPS chainrings, the other just standard alloy/pre-Ultra Drive, while the 11spd is 5-arm UT, not the newer four arm version. I'd like a bit more range for the 10% climbs, so I'm wondering about options to drop the 39t chainring to a 36t, without having to swap derailleurs, cassettes, or any other spendy bits.

Question: What are my best options for running a 53x36t setup, on both 10 and 11 speed Campy? And yes, I know that's a 17t range while 16t is the "Campy approved" range.

It seems like 36t chainrings were only made as CX or compact, which I don't believe share the same BCD as standard 53x39, or may require a compact F/D.

Any advice or guidance from those who have run this setup?

You will need to change cranksets. 39 is smallest on the 135 BCD Campy cranks. I think you got it figured out.

Ralph is dead-on...36t is only available on Campag compact cranks and the individual rings can be tough to source. Easier to find a Campag 11-speed 52/36 mid-compact complete crank...works with 10-speed no problem. I use an Athena 11-speed 52/36 with a 10-speed FD and chain and 13-29 cassette...no issues.

If you don't want to swap cranks a cassette change may be in order. For 10 spd Campy offers a 12-30 and IRD offers 11-32 & 11-34.

IIRC, the 13-29 was the greatest range in the original 10 speed--I'm not sure those original 10 speed rear mechs will shift a 32--does anyone know for sure?

13-29 was the early max, but Campy went to 12-30 in the last generation. IRD has offered a 12-32 and 11-34 for ages, but was out of stock for years. They've now made 11-32 and a re-ratioed 11-34 available.

I'm running an IRD 12-32 on my BMC MX while my wife has the 11-34 on her Kirk. All her other bikes have Campy's 12-30. In theory it is derailleur hanger dependent, but I have yet to try them on a bike that could not accommodate with either early or late gen 10 spd mechanicals.

Yeah, I actually have a 12x27 on my 11 speed, so I might just have to settle for a 29t cassette and grind it out, as I'm not buying a new crank....have another bike (Shimano) with a 11x32 that gets the job done, but wanted to at least have a bit more on the Campy bikes.

The good news is that campagnolo 10 record will **** any brand of crankset. Just in case you cannot locate a campagnolo crankset you can go to any other brand, even shimano.

IMO the FD record 10 will shift fine even with a 34T small chainring aswell.

With 11 speed i do not know because campagnolo did weird stuff with it.

IRD has been sold out of most of their wide range 10-spd Campy cassettes for a while. It's not clear whether they will be getting any new stock in. I have not communicated with them, but they've been sold out for several weeks now.

They had been out for years prior to late last year, I bought an 11-32 and 11-34 from SOMA Fab during Black Friday although they do appear to be out now. Universal has 11-32s in stock, however.

Minimum CR size for 135mm BCD is 39t..Gonna need a new crank, then spec a 53t big ring. With those LH shifters and a normal fder, it WILL work, just gotta be gentle when going to small ring from a 53 to 36..a Chain watcher would be a great idea. Maybe use a 50t big ring?? A 50t-12/13 is STILL a pretty tall gear.

There's also option of compact crank and the Wickwerks ultrawide ring set:

He's gonna need a compact or the CX campagnolo crankset for that.

Did not know they did campagnolo cranksets, cool to know.
