A couple of winter's riding seems to have made my rear Chorus hub a little tired. It doesn't roll like it used to. Looking at a couple of instructions of how to overhaul it, should somebody like me with the skills of an orangutan (with apologies to all the orangutans reading this) just take it into the shop or should I take a walk on the wild side?

learn to do it yourself. It's a bit more complex than in the days of the freewheel but its something everybody should know how to do.

easy as pie.
just keep the pieces together as you take them apart.

tools needed as follows
2 5mm hex keys
17mm box wrench
soft malet
grease

1/2 hour of time and you done.

Also, be very careful as you take the cassette body off the hub. The pawls and springs will go everywhere. I've been there at 11PM after a 6 pack.

Piece of cake, Tom. Add the barley beverage of your choice and a radio to pdxmech's list and go to it. At first I used the tech docs on campy's site, now I know the drill and do it a couple of times a year... probably overkill as the grease is never dirty but it makes me feel good and the bearings are cheap.

Do I need a cone wrench?

What kind of grease?

1. I don't for my 2003 Centaur hubs.
2. The shop guy at my LBS recommended a non-cycling grease: Sta-Lube grease. It's bright green, comes in a blue tube, and the package says it's for boat trailer axles. Fine for bike hubs too as long as you don't go nuts and put too much on.
