Although in a different time, in different land, and a very different war, may all take some measure of inspiration from your actions as an SFC in 1966, and find the courage and resolve to do what we can in our current and future struggles to save others.

RIP Soldier.

My across the street neighbor died last week. He was 96 years old, lived alone, active with a mind as sharp as a tack. He did all his own yard work, always declined my offers to help out. He had a girlfriend, in her 80’s, a few blocks away, that he would visit 3 times a day, every day. His girlfriend died first and word in the neighborhood was it was from Covid 19.

In February, I ran across him at the grocery store and while we were chatting it very circuitously came out that he “was in the Army in Belgium” in WW2. Turns out it was the 83rd Division in the Battle of the Bulge.

This CSM was the real deal. His exploits in Vietnam sound like the script for the film...Green Berets...with John Wayne. Airborne all the way and then some!

I wonder if he was in the 329th infantry. I never tire of the stories of the greatest generation. Perhaps the threat seemed more real, but they really stepped up in duty, responsibility, and self-sacrifice en mass in a way that I miss when I see how (too many) people behave today.
