Kids are going crazy and thereby, driving my wife crazy.

Luckily, local state parks are still open so I am going to take them camping this weekend. And will bring along a Dutch oven.

Anyone have any good peach, apple cobbler/crisp/pie recipes?

What I was going to do:

Apple pie:
Cut up apples
Throw pie crust at the bottom
Apples with sugar and cinnamon mixed
Butter (spats)
Pie crust at top.

OR

Peach cobbler:
Couple cans of peaches
Tapioca
Little bit of frozen/melted raspberry juice mix (maybe 1/2 cup)
Butter
Cinnamon crumble cake mix

I’ve had mixed results with this. Always looking for better recipes.

Would welcome other meal/dessert suggestions as well.

My dad makes a killer pineapple upside down cake in a cast iron Dutch oven over an open fire. Perhaps not conducive to camping.

We do a simple red neck version that uses white cake batter, fruit of your choice, and a can of sprite with butter that is pretty darn unbeatable. Much easier to carry into the field.

We did peach/apple the same way in the dutch oven.

A couple cans of peaches / apple pie filling in the bottom.
A box of plain cake mix spread over that.
Some brown sugar spread over the cake mix.
~1/2 stick of butter, cut in to pads, and spread over everything.

Cook over charcoal, with more briquets on top of the dutch oven than under it. It's been a while since I've made it so I'm not sure about cooking time, but ~30-45 minutes, IIRC.

If you have room in the cooler, bring some ice cream to go with it. :)

Peach cobbler was our go-to Dutch oven treat and the centerpiece of many a campfire feast. I've never forgotten, though, the New Mexican (ie, Spanish-Native American) style sopapillas we once made in a Dutch oven over a campfire on a cold, rainy night when provided the set-up at Philmont Scout Ranch. The waiting/anticipation that came with the process of frying the batches of sopapillas was a big part of the pleasure (but not the biggest part, by a long stretch).

Actually, one of my favorite scouting memories was of a pineapple upside down cake baked in an official scout dutch oven during the 1982 Long Rivers Council Spring Jamboree. Dug a pit for the dutch oven and put coals beneath and on top.

How do you check to see if the cake is done with coals on top of the oven?

It had a ridge around the circumference to prevent the coals from falling in.

NICE! Is that a unique/patented feature or just a good thing for manufacturers to include?

Not sure. It's the only design I know when it comes to dutch ovens.

The flat top Dutch ovens are often referred to as camp ovens and the design dates back to at least the late 1700s in this country.

p_nut you have inspired me. I'm going to take my family to our family land we we are going to campout this weekend. Bonfire, hot dogs, DUTCH OVEN! fishing, shooting, the whole nine yards.

The hell with all this nonsense I'm getting depressed and can think of no better way to celebrate us all having nothing to do.

Yes!! I haven’t heard of anyone getting the virus from a tree or a rock, so I’ll take my chances out there in the wild!

Thanks for all the recipes and suggestions. It’ll be a fun time for the whole fam.
