Like most people, I've found myself with some spare time on my hands and have decided to work on converting an old Trek 370(?) to a modern 10-speed group. I'd like to replace the handlebars I've got on it with something with a more compact shape (less drop) and a flatter transition to the shifters. Does anyone have any recommendations for a handlebar like that in 25.4 clamp?

Thanks!

DEDA Piega.

Sorry, brain fade, these are 26.0. (I've used these with 25.4 chrome moly mountain bike stems.)

Nitto m174a. It is the same shape as the noodle only shorter reach and smaller drop. My only complaint is the drops don’t extend far enough back.

Change the stem and use any bars you like?

Bontrager Cyclocross bars came in 25.4. Alloy. I have some 44ctc, if that's your size, that I'd sell. PM me if interested.

More than once while building another bike, I've come up with a lot of "correct" 25.4mm stems but too few 25.4mm handlebar choices (such as steel or "too narrow" or "too modern") for the particular application.

One time when I had a modern, strong/thick 25.4mm stem that I wanted to use, I modified it using an accurately self-centering sanding method that I share below.

It came out nice-looking and the old 26mm OEM handlebar bend and width work perfectly with this bike!
The Origin8 stems with "22.2mm" quill are sized so as to just slip into a French or Austrian (in this case) steerer with no sanding needed. Great product of the decade for these situations, and these Kalloy-made stems are very affordable (if rather weighty). Also the faint logo wiped right off using wet steel wool that left no scratches whatsoever.

So, I know very little about quill stems, but how easy is it to sway to a 26 mm quill stem?

But FYI.

Enlarging from 25.4mm to 26mm inside diameter, is the thickness of two pieces of paper on each side . (I measure 0.22mm radially to be exact)

Yes sorry, swap.

Can I just pull the 25.4 out and throw a 26 in?

EDIT:

Looks like I can just find a 26mm quill stem for a 1inch steerer tube and it should fit.
