One of the greatest, ever.
After his several bouts with cancer this so tragic.

His wife/rock Fiona Whelan is infected too, but apparently not also in critical condition.

The "Haystack" album. Had he put out nothing else, he would still be a treasure. Pulling for you, John. Beat this.

EDIT: Just saw we lost Songwriter Alan Merrill from Covid 19. Wrote "I love Rock & roll".

Actually it's straw, not hay. Always wondered where they got those bales as I've never seen a baler that used 3 strands of wire (or twine - but I think it's wire in the photo).

Great songwriter. I pulled out my old LPs of the first and third albums and transferred them to the hard drive last night.

Anyone know where he's been living? I know that his record label is in Nashville and he's recorded there recently. I still think of him as a local artist but he may not have lived in IL for over 40 years for all I know.

Here's another version of Angel from Montgomery. I love Bonnie Raitt but Susan Tedeschi has voice qualities beyond Raitt. Plus she goes into a bit of Sugaree.

Part of my college experience was Prine's music. Saw him live at Milwaukee summerfest on one of the side stages about 1974-75. Unfortunately, it was the last show of the evening and he must have been drinking pretty heavily beforehand and he had a hard time getting through any of the songs. But his lyrics.... we've lost another incomparable talent. RIP indeed.

He was always so graceful.

From his Facebook:
John Prine
January 29, 2016

"Kind words from the great Bob Dylan:
"Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about Sam Stone the soldier junky daddy and Donald and Lydia, where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that. If I had to pick one song of his, it might be Lake Marie. I don't remember what album that's on," Dylan told MTV producer Bill Flanagan."

From 1971... didn't know it went back that far.

The loneliness and emptiness of life without purpose... written by a young man wise beyond his years.

RIP, John.

We had an apartment in the city
Me and Loretta liked living there
Well, it'd been years since the kids had grown
A life of their own left us alone
John and Linda live in Omaha
And Joe is somewhere on the road
We lost Davy in the Korean war
And I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore
Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello"
Me and Loretta, we don't talk much more
She sits and stares through the back door screen
And all the news just repeats itself
Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen
Someday I'll go and call up Rudy
We worked together at the factory
But what could I say if asks "What's new?"
"Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do"
So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare
As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello"

There was a reason I stopped listening to "Lake Marie" several years ago. It just gets to me. This morning I've managed to watch three different live versions and nothing has changed, I have welled up once again.

He was a poet, who often made you laugh when speaking of heartache or tragedy. His music carried me through good times and bad, falling in love and breakups, and dozens of solo road trips, running to or from something or someone. His music never got old, the true test of great art. Thank you, Sir. You gave us something to think on and dream about and cherish. God speed and laughter wherever you've gone.

The loss of John Prine weighs very heavy on my heart. How fortunate are we to have existed within his orbit? I fondly remember a couple of tours where I opened for John solo, and he was always so warm and kind to me even as I was just getting my sea legs on the open road. On one such tour I was too young to rent a car to drive myself to the shows, so he invited me to ride along with him and the band. He was behind the wheel and I’ll never forget sitting in the back seat watching him drive us from one gig to the next. He seemed so content in the driver’s seat and was filled with joy at the sight of any Dairy Queen. We stopped and had lunch and ice cream there. Those nights on tour he invited me to sing “In Spite Of Ourselves” and “Paradise” with him and he always looked at me and smiled while we sang. His audiences’ reverence of those songs opened my eyes to what it means to be a great songwriter. He changed peoples’ lives with his songs. The last time I sang with him was with Sara and Aoife at Red Rocks last September. It was a magical, perfect evening. John made us feel so at home. Always. And that’s how I’ll always remember him. Smiling and singing a song. My heart goes out to Fiona, his entire family, his band and those who worked alongside him. Rest In Peace John Prine.

I remember Prine telling a story at a show many years ago (this may be on a live recording, too). He had just gotten divorced and was in this big old quiet house, so he decided to set his model train up. On the dining room table. And he nailed the track down.
“Because I could.”

Thanks for adding that one. John Prine was amazing, poignant and playful all at once. Just a remarkable take on life and lives. Honesty and humor. To lose anyone to this pandemic is tragic. To lose someone through skeptical or dismissive action or inaction is deeply concerning. To lose John is heartbreaking.

It is on Youtube for a few weeks and I may watch again.

I saw John several times in the 70s at U of I along with Steve Goodman and Bonnie Koloc. Was a great time for music.

I find myself listening to a lot of John's early work on Spotify these days and brings back a lot of good memories.
