I weigh 180 lbs and ride a set of 2004 Campy Eurus. I've got about 24,000 miles on them and they have been perfect.

I need a new set of wheels - I liked my Campy experience yet will consider handbuilts - I need your opinions and advice.

I'm looking at the colorado cyclist add and see the aluminum spoked Eurus - Are these are strong as the steel spoked ones? I also see the Protons and Neutrons - all seem to be priced well.

I want a set of strong durable wheels for 90% road 10% cross that roll well are stiff enough for my weight and a good value. Weight isn't as important as longevity and reliability.

Thanks for your help -
Erik

mavic elites came on my c'dale six13. i was skeptical having come from old school wheelsets. i now have to say they are bullet proof. after 2500 miles no problems. i am 6'4'" 220lbs. i have hit my share of potholes. perfectly true. only drawback that i can see is that with the bladed spokes a cross wind will give you a feel of steering resistance. also, the wheels took about 1200 miles to break in. i contacted mavic on this. they assured me that they would spin freely. the fly in the ontment is that the sealed bearing seals are so good that they need about 1200 miles to free up. after that nirvana. can't say enough about these wheels.

Talk to Ergott. He knows his wheels and will most certainly bring a smile to your face. He can build exactly what you're after. My weight is 185 and he built a pair of 1300 grams tubular wheels for me that are a dream. And bullet-proof too.

I may add that U also talk with Jeremy from Alchemy Wheel Works, he's in lovely Santa Fe NM . 505 983 4241 allow for mountain time. No knocking any other wheel builder but Jeremy is my exclusive wheel supplier for Smiley's bike fits and like Serotta , Alchemy Wheel Works make me look good with their end products.

Or talk to Mike Garcia at Odds and Endos (http://www.oddsandendos.com/).

Any one of these guys - Ergott, Jeremy, or Mike - can make you the wheels you want for less than the cost of factory prebuilts. And you seem to have a good idea what you want!

Good luck.

I have a pair to Protons with over 7,000 miles on them over three seasons and they have been great. No problems at all. :)

If I had 24,000 miles on a set of wheels I'd get the same damn thing, but I'm the type of nut bag that buys two pairs of the same shoes if I really like'em

Neutrons ride way smoother than Elites, and they a bullet proof as well.

I've had 2 sets of Chorus 32 hole/Open Pro wheels. They ride great, no cross wind problems (unlike my Ksyriums) and never had to true either set. One came with my ex/Cotcamp Hampsten YBB Strada Bianca that definitely has seen some off-road/cross riding. One set was Colorado Cyclist built and the other by persons unknown.

I just purchased a NEW set of 2006 Campy Eurus Tubular Wheelset new (retail $999) from ebay at 40% off list price... $639. My understanding is that one set remains.

And when on sale at Performance you can get for 240 plus shipping- a screaming deal. I am 250lbs and these wheels are great!

Best bang for the buck in my view - more comfortable than K's and no limited wind issues.
